Went for a pootle in the S last night... and found one of these new AMG SL55's in the traffic queue next to me.

Oooooh I thought, bet that sounds beefy. er... no. Dropped the window to listen to the four exhausts, but even when the owner booted it up the hill, I still couldn't hear it over the S!

To be honest, I was a bit surprised, even disappointed...

Well obviously it went like sh*t off a shovel, but I was still disappointed that it'd didn't have a bark to the exhaust note...

Spotted one in the local petrol station this morning - asked the driver if the windows had ever opened when parked in the pouring rain! He said "No" - but looked rather concerned and laughed it off . . .

The owner of Veloqx motorsport owns (aside from F50/550/ blah blah.......) the most incredible SL55 I've ever seen.
He's had the living crap modded out of it by the German Carlsson company - I had a quick chat with him about it his car and he told me it was completely unsilenced and de-catted.... it sounded UNBELIEVABLE - a SUPER loud throbbing roar..
There's always a solution to ANY automotive need provided the funds are forthcoming.

pah - hardly an innovation though is it? Audi TTs have been doing that for years

It may have been that that one was an SL500 SL350 with big wheels? The SL55AMG is a really, REALLY great sounding car.

Had the AMG badge on it... maybe he's done the old "I've got a 316, so I'll stick an M3 badge on it"...?

Nah you'd know if it was an SL55, they sound wonderful. Chap has one in the block of flats I live in. Even pootling along at 5 mph it has a potent growl.

Seems like a case of badge swapping then... certainly looked like the real deal...

Must have been a fake - was in a merc showroom helping my mum buy a C-class coupe and they had a CL55 AMG (Same engine in the s-class coupe) and the salesman asked if We'd like to hear it fired up. Bloody hell it sounded amazing! Tried to convince my mum to chop in her pension fund for it - no such luck though

AMG do a whole range of mods. You can buy a bottom of the range Merc and buy the body kit and AMG badging if you want.

Then you can buy the full AMG car, which may or may not have an AMG badge on. My E55 doesn't have an AMG badge, because I enjoy watching boy racers explaining to their girlfriends why they were just left for dead by an estate car

Gay car

Joust, I have just seen a car that was exactly the same as yours. First time I have seen one stationary then set off. More than impressed, and he wasn't flooring it either.

Edited to say, the noble that is.

I think the SL55 AMG is a fantastic motor - shame about the slushbox tho'.
Miss Leadfoot on the other hand, thinks it's not "beefy" enough & therefore doesn't qualify as a proper sportscar. No considerations for the performance, quality, etc - just damned out of hand on the looks alone.
