Just brought my firt TVR and have a few questions if someone can help. When I get in the car it smells badly of petrol, is this common. Also it seems to run a bit rough at high revs, now when I was young i used to fiddle with cars and so checked the ignition coil and there is oil on the ht lead metal contact, if my memory is correct i am sure this is not good, am i right and therefore what coil should i buy.
Thanks

If the oil is leaking from the Coil, then I would replace it with a new Bosch one.
Part number is PRC6574

Congrats on getting the car though.

Another vote for replaceing the coil, I think that ACT are among the cheapest. I got mine from there along with new leads, dizzy cap, spark plug extenders and rotor arm.

As for the petrol I can only suggest checking underneath for any leaks or getting the car up on stands and following the fuel hose....

Good luck!

I havent had any experience of bad fuel fumes. Maybe after a fill up, but this is only for a short while.

Quick note on the petrol smell, I have the same problem, there's another thread on this subject, suggestions include checking the petrol line to the engine (back of engine bay on drivers side) and check the jubilee clip that holds the petrol tank filler tube in place.

I've had two leaks on my Grif, the first was where the high pressure line joined the fuel rail ... the jubilee clip needed tightening (don't forget return line from regulator too). The second leak was in the boot where the rubber return line joined the tank; it's a fairly tight bend and the hose had cracked - luckily this is under low pressure, and there are holes in the boot for the fuel to escape from!

Where does the fuel smell come from? Front, back, underside?

Just solved mine it stank of petrol, it was the seal on the fule sender, open boot and sniff around top right of the tank opposite to fuel cap and see if it smell of petrol, if so just get an new seal easy to change just remove carpet. In the back of cabin where the rear speaker are there is a vent this goes above the petrol tank hence the smell in cabin.

It's often best to check the fuel lines and hoses with the pump running,as petrol evaporates very quickly.I found several leaks on my Wedge when advised to check it this way.

I'm a newby, just got a Chim, love it....however have had similar issues to yours.

Petrol smell: When the ignition is on a recirculation line takes fuel back from pump to the tank, on hot days the fuel easily vapourises and on entering the tank produces vapour which pressurises the tank a little which then leaks out via the filler cap, when its cold mine doesn't do it.

Rough running at high revs: I had the same issue, my local mechanic advised it could be the 'plug extensions' (aka Plug Shroud Adaptor) fitted between the end of the HT lead and the spark plug, these have finite life and do breakdown. I bought 8 new ones problem solved (did cost me 120 quid though, from TVR specialist David Gerard in Inkberrow, near Alcester (West Midlands). My local mechanic said these were also fitted to old Vauxhalls so with a bit of digging around you might get them cheaper elsewhere.

Cheers
