is there a standard set of checks that I can do to ensure my web site is accesible by everyone?

I have developed a new research site which some folks are having problems with. Before I expand the site I want to get it right.

Early problems were people using early Flash players, which was solved by rolling back the version were were using. Since then it seems that some users get a frozen screen and some active x control bared users can't get it to work at all. Some Mac users have had problems. firewals don't seem to like the fact it places the material on the PC.

Is there a standard industry tick list to ensure maximum accessabiliy by everyone before it is used in anger ?

Well there is the bobby check and the W3C Validator but they are probably a bit too strict for your needs and will only check the HTML elements of your page.

Active X will always cause issues with a large minority of people, flash will be blocked or not installed on many computers too. Do you need them?

I think the main issues are:

Operating system. We had a few problems with MAC that I think have been solved. Does it work on older or odd operating systems.

Browser version and interaction with such things as active x controls. If anyone has an older or peculiar version of a browser i would welcome a word of wheher you were able to make it work.

The version of flash in use, again we should have sorted that by now

If you can get it to generate any error mesages or tell me where it hung up that would be useful too.

If you want to test your site against lots of browers/operating systems with/without Flash try:

www.BrowserCam.com

They have an automated system which gives you a screen shot of how the site looks or you can use VNC to connect to individual machines for testing. You can pay for the service on a daily PAYG basis so it can work out very cost effective
