How do I get my new website on Google?

Just starting on a new website, loaded to the server but cant find it on Google when I search. I am with Register1 who are great by the way!
So I have to do something special to make it searchable?

Well you have got some work in front of you 
Firstly submit it to google here www.google.com/addurl/
It can take a while before google gets the pages indexed though. To get any sort of good ranking you need to start getting high quality links to your pages from high ranking sites. Start swapping links with other webmasters of similar websites. Something I've noticed now my site is climbing up the search rankings, is to name your pages with the words people are likely to be searching for. For instance, on my website, a common search term is "borovets webcam". I have a few slightly differently named pages that the url contains borovets and webcam. Make sure that your title tags reflect the content on your pages, and make that content is as high quality as possible.
Another option that helped me, was using google keywords advertising. It wasn't cheap, and at first didn't seem to be making any difference. as with most things though, patience is a virtue, it came good in the end. You can of course submit your site to MSN and yahoo. Initially, I didn't bother. It didn't make any difference though because links to my site were followed by their web spiders and it got indexed anyway. Since then I have submitted variations on a theme to them and it seems to have worked.
So far google has indexed nearly a thousand pages of my site, most of which are from my forum. If the keywords that people look for are contained in them, you'll get a ranking.
It's a long job, that needs attention. Our forum started on the 2nd of August last year, and I'm quite chuffed to have made it onto page 1 of googles rankings. It is going to make next ski season very busy for us.

If you have a phpbb forum on your website, using this tool www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=371752&highlight=sitemap will generate a sitemap for google to spider across. It has helped me a lot. It may look a bit daunting, but it is worth it I can assure you.
