GALLARDO SPYDER ON TOP GEAR
Discussion
As usual, JC contradicted himself for the sake of a piece.
Those who remember the '03 Lambo 'special', and the testing of the original Coupe, will recall he thought the handling was "epic" and "like a Lotus Elise", "changed direction like a house fly" and "is definitely a better car than the 360 Modena". In fact the ONLY flaw he could find was that it wasn't a Ferrari! Plonker.
Now he says the Gallardo "isn't really a drivers car". What happened in two and half years. The car got worse?
The fact that whoever is the Stig for this series, only managed a 0.1 second better lap time in the dry than "Fresh Stig" did in the WET, should be a reminder to everyone that this show is great entertainment first and a credible testing forum a VERY, VERY distant second.
I don't miss an episode, as I'm a big fan of Richard Porter's writing, but even now I can see JC being critical of the LP640 because "it's no Veyron"!
Spyder looked fab.

Loved it too!!!
Question... is the Spyder based on the 04 or 06 Coupe? Autocar seems to imply the former!!!!

although developed as an all new model it is of course based on the '06 coupe with the same benefits such as tweaked engine, exhaust, gearing, suspension & steering etc
what did autocar say?
which issue are you referring to?

All issues!!!! In the new car prices section they list the available Gallardo Coupes as 5.0 V10, 5.0 V10 SE and 5.0 V10 2006 (is the 5.0 V10 still available as a new car though?... I did not think so!!) .
Anyway under the Gallardo Spyder section it just says 5.0 V10 which according to their own definitions of the coupe would make that a NON 2006 model!!
I'm confused!

autocar are wrong and i'm right!
they just need to update their records.
5.0L V10 was the original model no longer on sale
5.0L V10 SE was the special edition which previewed the '06 revisions in the limited edition hard top model
5.0L V10 '06 is the first mid life refresh of the gallardo with all revisions applied to both coupe & spyder.

Tis what I thought. Ta very much!!!
Just watched the review on their website....
Top gear has really lost its way, pointless drifting tyre smoking bollax...
How did he arrive @ the verdict...."not a drivers car" ref coupe?
Agreed, i remember the words "like a fly" 2 !!!
That programme has become sickly with everyone blowing smoke up his arse.
Better review would have been 2 proper drivers, out on the road then on the track, 430 Spyder Vs Gallardo Spyder.
Colours on demo car worked well though, shame no Callisto Rimms, suit the Spyder best.

I agree on all points. I guess we need to remember it is TV for the masses, not a critical assessment of a car for its target market. All the sideways stuff is fun to watch but basically crap.
well yeah - but at the same time 99% of lambo and fezza drivers in my experince can't get anywhere near the cars abilities which massively overshadow their own (i include myself naturally ) so getting uptight over tenths of seconds on a tossy track or whether JC uses the word 'sublime' enough is maybe taking TopGear a bit seriously? We all want people to applaud the cars we own as the best and voraciously defend them when people diss them. And then justify why the disser doesn't know what he was talking about. Yet think they can genuinely say "well my lambo actually generates .45g higher and the fulsome feeling i get through the wheel is blather blather blather" - and be MORE right than JC. It's all just like one big owners circle jerk to me
oh yeah....but i think TopGear has become much mroe toss as it's now just a poor facsimile of a car show. This weeks was better but last weeks was utter rubbish IMO.
I actually enjoyed 5th gear a lot more this week than TG (oh, with the exception of that quim cello delivering the new Ferarri - the man comes accross as an utter tool)

Unfortunatly Clarkson's veiw on cars is only 'His Veiw'. Different cars suit different people, if Clarkson doesn't like it he slates it. I think Top Gear are just after cheap laughs now were as in the past they would show a car in its true light i.e good points and bad points!
I hate to hear somebody say 'Why did you buy one of those, Clarkson said they are crap'
I find it strange when he changes his mind on cars often, I hope he is not being influenced in any way!!!!!

I what you mean. No one who is actually in the market for a supercar is likely to give a rats ass what a TV journo thinks, so ultimately no harm is really done.
I'd just like them to be a bit more consistent with their comments. Clearly too much to expect a bit more professionalism to go along with the humour. Which is a shame.

Not so sure about that, quite a few of the Gallardo Spyders which have been for sale have suddenly been sold this week
One of the dealers asked me if I would sell mine, because he had some footballer who wanted it on the back of the Top Gear program

William Loughran has a black RHD spyder in, wonder how long that will be there.
