Overnight accom needed between Exeter and Bristol

I first posted this in the P & P but with no response so I thought a more South West targeted approach might work.

As the title says I'm planning to stay one Friday night somewhere between Exeter and Bristol to break up a fairly long journey. Can anyone recommend a nice place not too far from the M5? We'd like something like an old coaching inn sort of a place, nice bar, clean bedrooms, decent food etc - just Mrs R and me, no kids.

Any thoughts?
