Sort of similar to Phoenix's problem/query (well, a little).

I have an 0845 number pointing at my home phone number which has worked well for the past six months or so. However the late night calls from American customers & anyone that calls in the evening have led me to wonder - is there any way of knowing who is calling, business or family? I have caller display but many people are witheld or private (including some of my family - awkward people!) so I never know what to do when the phone rings at 10pm. The times I do pick it up, it's some American wanting to buy things (great - but often I'm not at my desk/computer isn't on/I'm in bed...etc).

Are there any phones that'll give a different ring tone when someone's dialling the 0845 number and another for my home phone so I know to differentiate and either relax with a glass of wine and natter to my mother about her latest problems or rush to the computer to make some money?

I hope this makes some sense.

Hannah.

I think bt still offer a second number on the same line with a diffrent ring tone. This is a lot cheaper than having a real second line as its "virtual"

The company that provides me with an 0845 number offers me two options, either the callers number comes up on callerID or the 0845 number. Perhaps it might be worth giving your guys a call to see if they do it soon?

The other option as mentioned above is BT Callsign where they give you a second number on the line which rings slightly differently. Costs £1.75 a month. They also sell a pair of little boxes which you put inbetween the phone socket and two handsets, the boxes detect which ring is coming through and based on this routes your calls between the two phones.

Service is called Twin Talk, obviously you can switch off the ringer on either of the handsets too.
