On a similar vein, the Bible Edition 2 explains a third way for emptying and refilling the cooling system not involving the radiator bleed screw.
It describes the use of the 'header' tank.
Is this another name for the swirl tank ?

As i will be doing this on the weekend could any one oblige?

No they are different.

The Header Tank is at the front in the middle and has a blue plastic cap. The Swirl Tank is the other one to one side of the engine with a brass plug on the top and the otter switch in the bottom.

Cheers,

Simon.

Isn't that the expansion tank.

The Header Tank and Expansion Tank are the same thing. It maintains a head of water and allows for expansion.

In the chim, serpentine engined, the blue-capped expansion tank is on the drivers side and below the level of the swirl tank, so it cannot maintain a head of water.

Yes your right, hence the correct term is expansion tank. Its just that’s what some people refer to it as and being a sealed system (theoretically) it works the same way.

That is why you should only use the brass plug to fill a drained down system, theoretically (this being a TVR and all) the air is bled off from the radiator bleed screw and system air exits through the swirl tank and into the expansion tank.

Cheers,

Simon.

Simon is right, it is the expansion tank and it is below the level of much of the system which is why it's not a good idea to let the water level drop below the botton of the tank as water can get drawn in through the liuttle feeder tube at the bottom.

this is the hand of ignorance...

Aside from looking pretty swish, what are the advantages of silicon hoses?

I know that i am slightly biased. The silicone doesn't degrade with age like normal hoses, would still look smart in 10 years, they are also burst proof.
