At the point where the aircon in my '99 Chim is fixed, is there any reason why I shouldn't control the aircon from an independant switch? That way I can still use the heater controls to get temperate aircon - rather than only icy cold air.

There's no reason why not, that's how it works in other cars, including the Range Rover P38 which has an identical system. I think it was only made like that by TVR as the air con system was an add-on.

The Griff system is like this, you can have any temperature A/C.I assume(probably wrong)that the cold setting is activated by a microswitch or similar? If so,it would be easy to replace with a rocker switch under the steering column cowl

No, you're not wrong, that's exactly how it works.

heh! I'm only getting icy cold air when the system is freshly gassed - my local is tracing down a leak. The aircon chap also (apparently) turned down the thermostat so the compressor cuts out later.

Let us know how you get on. I had mine regassed last summer and it was fantastic for the week that it worked. I'm meant to be having the leak traced, but haven't done so far.

heh, I'll update once I get my Trev back following an accident (someone side-swiped me on an exit slip road). Car's repairable, Hilton is just waiting for authorisation from the insurance co.

I think that when the radiator was recored, a number of aircon joints/pipes were disturbed. Up to that point, the aircon was working just fine.
