Does anyone know the cheapest way to get a tracker fitted?

Errr, go to a car hi-fi/security/electronics installer who also happens to be a tracker agent (like www.prestigeaudio.co.uk ). There isn't a lot of discount from memory as the price is fixed by tracker and they don't like it being undermined. Fixed fees for fitting/purchase then renewable yearly subs thereafter (unless lifetime unit). Cheapest is about 250 GBP from memory, but the more useful ones will cost nearer 400 GBP.

Have a chat with your insurance company first about which system they recommend. Fitting the most expensive tracker system won't necessarily give you the best insurance discount.

Try the Porsche insurance, details from any OPC. My Cayman does not need a tracker to get excellent full cover as it's invoice price is not over £70K. I also asked if a tracker of any sort helped and it reduced quote by only £60. I also get 2 track days a year included although excess goes up to 10% of cars value.

Not the cheapest but does not require tracker and all repairs done by OPC if needed.

Before you fit it, try calling the tracker numbers as if you have an after sales complaint or query. You might find as I did/do that they're utterly useless at returning calls or doing anything sensible. I just got a refund credit note for my old M3 from years ago for some reason, then a late payment demand for the same car! I called to investigate, promised a call back that didn't come.

The tracker failed on the 911 recently, and it took me two weeks before I could get to speak to anyone. Eventually (after many many failed attemptes to speak to them re the remote testing they were supposed to be carrying out) someone turned up to look at it and left without a word. Is it working now? No idea.

The product might be good but the service is p1ss poor, I'm not dealing with them again. I'll look at the Porsche option.

But give them a ring yourself... log a "call me back" request on their website and see if you get called. Log several tens of them. Bet you'll not hear. I never did.

Many thanks guys. It's not actually for my Porsche, my insurance company aren't bothered about having one on the GT2. It's the X5 they're worried about

Simon,

I had a unit fitted to a brand new car. After a couple of months a rattle developed from inside my dashboard. The Main dealer couldn't find the source so I enventually invited the TRACKER unit company out to investigate. They found the unit battery loose in my dash (the glue had failed) but also a Stanley knife, which they had left.

Add this to the fact it took them three attempts to fit the unit as well leads me to have less than no confidence in the company.

After numerous complaints letters they are still to apologise for their appalling service.

Thats the most annoying part, they said the knife did not belong to the final technician who came out to invetsigate the rattle.

However he took it from my car and kept it. The theiving g.t

on the opposite side of the coin, trakker have been great with me - re-registered the unit when I bought the car, doc's arrived next day, put on a new private plate, told trakker, new docs the following day, car low loaded twice due to issues - both times call from trakker saying my car is being moved outside 5 miles of the home location - do I know anout it ... So therfore can't really fault them ... :-)

I have had experience of two types of Tracker over the last few years and shortly a 3rd on the new car when it arrives.

Type 1 RAC TRACKSTAR

Was fitted to an Impreza WRX wagon and was an utter pile of rubbish. The system was fitted with the Safe Speed Option and it never worked. We had an engineer out who couldn't determine what the problem was with it, but it did start to work for a day or two before it failed again. It didn't inspire confidence that the whole system was working. Indeed we asked Trackstar to do a trace on the car (they offered this as a free service) and they couldn't find the car even though it was sat outside in broad daylight.

Type 2 TRACKER Monitor

Had this fitted to the original Boxster and to the M3. That system was always very reliable. We had the Boxster carted off on a transporter one day and forgot to call Tracker. They were frantically trying to get hold of us when we were outside and didn't hear them call the 3 phone numbers we had registered with them. The Police bless them ended up pulling the car just off the M4. Only a few weeks ago we had a similar thing happen with the M3 (Even though we haven't owned it for 12 months and had supposedly cancelled). We got multiple phone calls and messages left.

I've had the opposite experience.

SL55 AMG - exactly the same scenario. One a transporter going back to dealer. No call from Tracker. Same thing happened THREE TIMES

996 C4S - exactly the same scenario. Car coming back from dealer. No call from Tracker.

Coupled with the completely shite "it's impossible to transfer the hardware to another car" bollox I'm going to steer well clear in future.

Oh yes, their call centre is triple shite as well.

Just noticed that you had a call 12 months after you cancelled. Why is this good?

Had 2 calls from RAC Trackstar when the car has gone off on the back of a flatbed.

Don't really want to get a tracker but insurance is due and there is a significantly cheaper deal available if the car has one. I could just get a Tracker Monitor / Horizon and be done with it but I am curious about trackers that offer the ability to track the car online.

Does anyone know if you can do this with the Tracker Echo and what the difference is between the Echo and Response?

Thanks chaps,
Loony

Loony wants to reaffirm that he thinks trackers are useless but if he's going to get one the 'track car via website' option appeals to his compulsive obessive side. Loony is aware that this tracker is diverting money from a new plasma TV so is relatively peeved about this whole subject

When transporting the car they could have simply unlocked the car whilst in transit, that switches the Tracker off.

It was the same driver both times. He confirmed that he didn't touch the car either time. It was locked by me after it was loaded on to the truck.

Oh, and did I mention how shite the callcentre is?
