Would it be worth upgrading to Windows XP with Windows Vista coming out at the start of the next year. I'm thinking I really need to be upgrading with current problems (see other thread from me today) but not sure whether its going to be worth upgrading to xp now with vista coming out in 6 months

Thoughts?

Vista has some hefty CPU / GFX requirements.

If you have a recent High Spec PC (3-6mths) then wait for vista.

With anything else, unless you're prepared to upgrade your hardware, stick to XP.

Agree with JB

Got Vista Beta running on some boggo (min MS recommended spec) spec things for testing purposes... and quite frankly it's PAINFUL.

From my tinkering with Vista, I'd say go with XP. It's proven, stable and a good OS. Vista is a good OS too, but requires a lot of new learning and those security centre prompts are a total pain in the backside!

For goodness sake, you need to give admin permission to delete folders, plus the folder security itself is a total pain.

I just hope it's as secure as Microsoft say it is with all this hassle!

Would a machine not currently running XP have the grunt for Vista?

An awful lot of them will not.

Read that to use ALL of the features of Vista, something like 5% of PCs worldwide have enough grunt...

It's not quite that bad. I have what most people call a bottom end PC.

- Athlon XP 3200+
- 1GB RAM
- Socket A mobo!

The best thing going on my PC is my graphics card which is an Nvidia 6800GT. But Vista Beta 2 runs perfectly on my specs.

Being a beta Vistas performance can be exceptionally hit and miss depending on hardware and drivers in your system.

Common sense would tell me that business shouldn't bother with Vista at this stage of the game unless they are developing software for it or general compatibility checks with existing products. Wait until it's released THEN plan your upgrade paths around the real requirements it has.

Of course this doesn't stop the fact I've already had a recruiter on the phone wanting to know if I have 6 months of Windows Vista experience....
