After buying advice for one of these.
Ideally after 2-3 year old 30k mile ca\r for mrs_t to use day to day to replace her CLK.

Can anyone advise:

reliability - are they pretty decent at not falling to bits.
fuel consumption - does the diesel really return >30mpg (says 40 but don't believe that!).
Depreceation seems to be slight on these - whats the likely sticker price for a JTD GT with
leather, air con, cruise etc

Or is it better value to hunt down a 166 of same age / spec ?

I have just traded a GT JTD in for a new Brera, and it was a great car!

I got one of the first car's into the UK, and that was a June 2004 on an 04 plate, so you won't find any older than that.

I covered just under 30K miles, in the 2 years and it was pretty much faultless. I had one small electrical fault, caused by a loose conection to one of the fuel injectors at 10K miles. This was sorted very quickly by the dealer under warranty, (that section of wiring loom was replaced), and the problem never came back. Other than a steamed up rear foglamp, again replaced under warranty I can't think of anything really?

I usually averaged 39-41mpg, and that was with fairly quick driving. on a long run down to Goodwood FOS last year it was over 46mpg cruising at 80-85mph minimum. So the claims are true! You could easily better what I got with a lighter right foot!

The build quality is probably not as good as your wife's CLK, but not as far behind as you might expect.

My Alfa dealer in Preston have my old car on the forecourt for £17K, it has the 18" wheels, leather and BOSE stereo. Cruise and climate etc are standard.

Hope that helps!

Probably - the 166 is a fantastic car but the buying public just don't seem to rate them, therefore initial depreciation is crippling. Great for the subsequent owner(s) though.

No RHD JTD 166s though.
A classic Alfa UK own goal.

If the JTD is not important, the 166 is a great used buy, drives well and looks sensational.

Cheers for the info Nick - exactly what I wanted to hear.
Would be very interested to know what they offered you as the trade pice / part ex price against the Brera (need to know what kind of bargaining room there will be on the price). I appreceate you don't want to tell the world, but if you would be willing PM me with a ballpark figure it would help a lot!

Re the 166 - what kind of mpg will the 166 2 litre t spark return?

I loved the GT, but I have to say the Brera is in another league!

You can feel it is just much better built, the interior especially has a real quality feel about it that wasn't there in the GT. This is even more noticeable in the SV, where the dash and door trim is proper aluminium, not painted plastic, and with the full glass roof!

It feels very smooth and solid to drive, the ride is much better than my Gt, (both on 18's), and the brakes are fantastic, (4-pot's on the JTD and V6).
The JTD is very smooth and has a nice 5 pot growl when you accelerate, almost like an old quattro. The refinement is much better, very quiet on the motorway with much less wind and tyre noise than the GT. I haven't had a proper back-road blast in it yet, but it seems to have plenty of grip and less roll than the GT.

Only negatives if you want to look at it like that, is a bit less storage in the cabin for odds and sods, and the back seats really are pointless! Alfa would have been better off just fitting locking bins like in the Spider, as they are only useful as a shelf!

You definately won't regret getting one, unless you have to carry more than 1 passenger!

It's easy - click on my name next to one of my posts. Then on the right hand side of the screen where it shows my profile you'll see an 'Email Me' option - click on that and you're away.
