My brother in law recently bought (or reserved) an 04 personal number plate only to find that the DVLA won't allow him to register it to his car as it would make the car appear newer.

Is there any way that this plate can legally be used on a car older the 2004, by private transfer or something? If not, can it be used on my car which is a 2004 model, but only a 53 plate?

I have already told him that I rather suspect he will have to wait until he has a car new enough but, thought someone here may know something on the subject.

Thanks in advance.

Easy one: No.

An '04 plate can only go on a car that was 1st registered on or after 1st March 2004.

To be fair, the DVLA Sale of Marks site makes this very clear.

Of course you can't. Otherwise people would buy a new plate just before selling their car (or buy a new plate instead of a new car every year)...

Exactly as I thought. Just common sense if you ask me but, if there were a loophole, I would expect that someone here would know about it

Just change the 04 to 53.
Nobody will notice, and you won't get any speeding tickets
