I've got to pop my Golf into the body shop to get the boot yanked back out after someone drove into me.

Question is: is it illegal to drive about without a bumper - I don't mind risking it to drop it and pick it up again, but if the weather is nice at the weekend I'll whip it off.

Whats the score on this Mr BIB's?

ETA Is it the same with the front too?

I recall Incorrigible having a similar dilema (although he sold his rear bumper). If I remmember rightly it came down to having sharp extrusions. As long as the body work is smooth you're ok. If the brackets for the bumper stick out and could lacerate someone's legs you're not. However, think of that as short term.

^this^, but not just short term, for as long as you like

trouble is, it won't be very smooth

Gaffa tape and foam around any nasty spikey bracket things should see you right for the drive to the garage, its what I've done on occasions over the years

Presume all rear lights/refelectors, number plate/light are not affected.

What BiB would be looking for is as stated sharp edges that could harm a pedestrian brushing against same.

Offence is - parts and accessories in such condition as likely to cause danger (Con and Use 84)

Yep, whole rear end fine, just needs removing for the bodyshop.

If a BIB saw my car with aformentioned foam and gaffer tape to 'secure' the dangerous areas, you wouldn't get narky?

I personally would not.

Bear in mind he has to prove the danger...

Just found this thread Neil.

Let me know when you're on the move and I'll get one of my boys to 'stick you on'

You don't want to happen to you what happened to Plato this weekend after being shunted up the rear, due to the 'change of shape' to the rear of his car it started to draw in exhaust fumes, it could have ended very badly but in the end only made him cry loads!
