Xbox 360 price drop?
Discussion
Whats the PH opinion on the pricing for the xbox over the coming months?
It seems steady at around £270 for the full kit. I read that Microsoft are pleased with the progress and should have 10m units sold by the time the PS3 hits the shelves.
What do you think the chances are they will slash the cost at Xmas/PS3 launch just to kick Sony where it hurts as the PS3 looks like being bloody expensive!

Well I haven't any inside info but, MS have gone on record and stated they want to actually make some money out of this xBox as opposed to the god knows how many billion $ loss the original made. The 360 is stil state of the art and I would imageine thay are still loosing money or only just breaking even at best on everyone sold so i wouldn't expect much of a price drop.
There have not been any major cost reductions during the first year (such as moving any of the main chips to a smaller manufacturing process) that i'm aware of.
The first price drop for consoles generally tends to be a large one so I would say it's unlikely. Also it's already quite a bit cheaper than the PS3
You might well get some nice bundles though
EDITED because I missed the n't

A proce drop is possible, tho there still loosing 50-100 on each box sold, they wont talk about a price drop until they do one.
more likely is they'll bundle a game or xbox live subscriptiosn with new ones.
Oh and rumours abound about 360's with hd-dvd inbuilt and HDMI connector on the back.

I read that after Xmas, Microsoft will be releasing a kind of 360.1 if you like. Same machine, same power, however, a smaller processor.
The smaller processor means less cooling needed and therefore the annoying fan noise will be reduced.
The smaller chip also costs less to produce, which they said will be reflected in the price of the new 360.
Long story short, we should be looking at cheaper 360's in the new year.
Maybe even before if Sony get their PS Betamax out, it's only 9 months past the specified release date for it, so I guess it may be ready soon
As for the HD DVD, it is meant to be coming in the form of a bolt on. I would be suprised if it were actually in the new 360.

Its hard to disect the Microsoft results, but in the 12 months to the end of June 2006 the Microsoft Home and Entertainment division LOST $1.2Billion..... They also admited that they make a loss on each and every Xbox 360 they sell.
Its frightening figures, but I am sure Microsoft knows what it is doing and they wont stand losses like that for too long....

I thought that was always the case?
Make a loss on the console but bring the ££'s in from each game sold and now with things like L!ve?
Do their losses really matter though?
By the 3rd gen people will just buy the product without thinking, with inbuilt Media centre, internet access and they'll be knocking on the door of Sky+ type setups etc.
I think long term they see themselves being the multimedia hubs of everyone's homes, something Sony with the PS3 are not even going with.
But to get their foot in the door M$ are having to loose $$$ to get in there via gaming consoles etc. It's quite clear their intentions are overall multimedia/internet and they are doing a bloody good job!

Sounds like most Microsoft divisons other than Windows & Office. Having said that Consoles are sold on the old razor and blades business model so what you loose on the inital hardware sale but make it back with the games (license cost for Xbox, 360 logos and such) original hardware addons/licensed 3rd party addons (again logo licensing) and eventually out of waranty repairs/spare parts.
It also sounds like thanks to broadband Microsoft can also sell you additional blades in the form of on-line services. So by 2008 I can well see the 360 turning a nice profit as all of the original units will be well out of waranty and still needing subs paid for on-line content.

Mr Whippy 3rd gen means nothing. Sega, Atari & Nintendo can all tell you about huge market share and how quickly it can vanish.
Quite so. Enforcing an overly strict licensing model, releasing hardware that is difficult to program for (which increases developer costs and thus the big publishers tend to avoid it) or attempting to use previous market dominance to leverage a higher price point than the market is prepared to pay.
All of those will mean your ultimatley selling norweigen blue's.
Personally I think Sony have got it very wrong with the PS3, Microsoft being first to market means that the price point is already established as is the general feature set that you've got to match. Sat side by side in a shop your average punter is going to try to get most bang for buck and that the PS3 just doesn't stand out enough from the 360 to command the price.
I think the Wii will be moving Nintendo firmly in to the #2 slot as it will be released with hypothetically one of the largest games catolouges avaliable (NES, SNES, Gamecube, talk of Sega's old favorites appearing) all for very little cost per download. Plus current pricing speculation puts it in to the laughable position that you could by the basic 360 AND the Wii for the same as the high end PS3, 2 for the price of 1 and in the drunken gaming area nothing is going to be more funny than you and your mates waving those remotes around whilst full of beer and curry.
