V8S door mirror replacement
Discussion
Bit stumped by this one.. After some t1t knocked my mirror and broke the bracket on the way to Le Mans, I've finally got my hands on a new one. However, unlike my old S3C, the base of the bracket does not sit proud of the door, but is recessed.
Couple of dodgy photos from my mobile..
Thus, the head of the grub screw (top photo at about 11 o'clock) which locks the braclet in place is not accessible and there is only about 3mm of screw visible between the bracket which needs to be replaced and the metal doohickey is attatched to via the grub screw.
Took all of the trim off the inside of the door thinking I might be able to access things from the inside, but alas no, the aforementioned doohickey, (stop me if I'm getting too technical) is well and truly glassfibred into the door, no way of removing it.
Anyone know the size of the grub screw? Only thng I can think of is to by a new allen key and cut it so it will fit between the head of the screw and the door recess..
How on earth they put this together in the 1st place beats me...

Hi I had the same problem when the grub screw gave up and left the mirror loose and floppy.
Tried using a cut down allen key (mine was 3.5mm) but too tight at '11 o'clock' and would damagethe door casing.
Removed door card but as you say whole fixing is 'glassed in'.
Simple solution after thought
1 Make sure mirror is in 'out' position - not folded to door on shaft.
2 Tighten grug screw as much as possible to allow mirror to pivot to position required - level to match the opposite side.
3 Drill a small (3mm) hole to one of the easily accessible 'pockets' on the shaft - I chose the one at 7 o'clock. Crefull not to drill to touch cables in core, but drill through both outer ring and fixed shaft.
4 fix using a 3mm hardened tapered machine screw - sort of thing from an ole washing machine casing- if kept loads from old bits of machinery etc. (about 5-7mm long)
5 gently screw home intil its tight -you can locktite if reqd. Screw will bit a thread if done cafefully.
6 replace shroud - screw head in the recess or pocket so does not interfere.
7 Have a drink - job done
Hope this is of help

Thanks..
However, progress so far, bugger all..
Can't unscrew the collar the grubscrew mates to, its stuck fast by either glue or glassfibre.. Would probably help if I could get a decent grip on it, but I'm not sure that will help all that much..
Cut down allen key won't budge the grubscrew, that too seems stuck fast..
Just to top it off, bolt at the other end of the bracket I'm trying to replace has nothing left on the head of the bolt to get a grip on to remove it so I think thats going to have to be drilled out and replaced.

I have been through all this with my 1st Chim. I will post a link to my thread shortly when I find it, suffice to say if you put a screwdriver shaft or something similar across the broken bits of the tripod to get some torque you should be able to unscrew the whole lot from the door without needing to get near the grub screw.
As for tightening up floppy mirrors I also described a method for that one too.
Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks Matt
Just tried to unscrew the whole assembly and one of the two remaining lugs snapped off, but I think by drilling into the broken bracket, attatching a decent self tapper and applying a bit of force it might just come loose..
Was half expecting to see bits of blood and hair on that hammer Mike..
Should really have done a search on the threads here before asking a dumb question..
Was outside struggling to sort this out with thunderclouds approaching and starting to get a little annoyed..
