Seems like recent topics offer me an opportunity to post some recent pics but as I don't want to seem to hijack the threads I'll start a new one.

Critters with wings and the use of Macro mode to start with.

Difficult subject as the devils refuse to stay still. But as my Canon S3 IS has a SuperMacro mode with 0mm minimum focus I just had to try it ...

In another place Get Carter mentions potential problems with fire and wood (spurious weak link via choppers as well...)

We had a big fire here 10 days ago which consumed a stock of, apparently, 77,000 wooden pallets and a very large pile of chipped wood from scrapped pallets. Funny stuff wood - and fire - as these shots will, I hope, show.

Here is the blaze getting well underway and shortly before one of the power lines, or its connector, broke with the heat (though not all did) and the line came down causing a chain reaction across several pylons. Apparently it also took the lights off the roof os Police Skoda as it fell.

A couple of hours later and things are well under way. The building in silhouette is a substation which is right next to the seat of the fire, as can be seen in the next pic, but seems completely unscathed.

Viewing the site a couple of days later, when the roads were reopened, the damage is evident yet many places obviously well in the area of the fire are relatively untouched.

The fire crossed a road, without apparent damage, and burned some of the wooden fence posts opporsite - but not all of them, even though there is evidence of grass fire and singed bushes several metres past this fence.

I was bracing myself to see pictures of flying insects followed by someone holding a can of hairspray and a lighter

Now there's a thought ...

Might need an assistant for that shoot!

On a window.

Fortunately these litle beasties are too laid back to buzz around a lot to seek a way back to the world and relatively docile which allows the photographer to get the lens a few mm's from its backside without it taking fright.

The downside of 0mm close focus (or even close to that) is that the only way I can think of for getting any reliable light onto the subject is backlighting on a window - which tends to produce more of a silhouette than an image. Still, it's quite amusing trying to capture a slightly different view.

Other than a little cropping on the first two and a touch of brightness adjustment on the second one, the insect images are as they came from the camera. No other adjustments applied other than resizing and compressing for the web.

Obviously it is so long since I left school that my memory has faded quite badly - should have thought of that I guess ...

OK. I'll work out the logisitics and see what can be done. Just need a fire proof case for the camera.
