What are the consequences for driving without displaying tax?

My co. car is taxed, but the tax disc has been repeatedly lost by the fleet company.. At present, I'm driving a different car, but in the time that they have been attempting to sort this issue out the MOT on my car has expired.

The fleet company have provided a "Comfort" letter, to advise that the car is taxed, and my company have agreed to cover costs of any fine should I be stopped/caught for non-display..

My question is, can my license be endorsed for non-display or is it simply a fine?

Cheers in advance folks..

It's just your money they want for this (ridiculous, outdated) rule as far as I'm aware.

In fact, it's just your money they want anyway, but that's another story...

I think the law is "failing to display" rather than "failing to tax". I believe this is a small £20-30 fine and no points.
Im sure DVD or some other bod with the knowledge can fill in.

Vehicle Excise Registration Act 1983

Section 33 —(1) A person is guilty of an offence if—
(a) he uses, or keeps, on a public road a vehicle in respect of which vehicle excise duty is chargeable, and
(b) there is not fixed to and exhibited on the vehicle in the manner prescribed by regulations made by the Secretary of State a licence for, or in respect of, the vehicle which is for the time being in force.
(2) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 1 (£200)on the standard scale. (No points)

Can be actioned by FPN for IIRC the sum of £30.

Some would accept paperwork that vehicle was taxed and NFA but there are others that would reach for the pens...

Some while ago I was forced to stop by a loon (in the outside lane of a busy d/c) and had my tax disc stolen (it's a long story!).

Anyway I stopped a passing fuzz on my way home and regailed the long story, and he told me not to worry about the tax display issue until I got a replacement and gave me his card to pass on to any other officer that might stop me so an explanation could be backed up. Nice chap.

So in essence, don't worry about it.

But then I drove around for 2 months with no front number plate at all and nobody noticed/cared. Maybe it's just Nofolk.
