Fast, discreet family car for <10k

Bit of a 'what car' thread on behalf of a friend, if I may.
Criteria:
1) Family sized saloon or hatch
2) Manual only
3) A bit of poke
4) Reasonable running costs
5) Understated and discreet
6) Ideally no more than 3/4 years old
7) £10k maximum
Already considered are Mondy ST220, Saab 9-3 and 9-5 Aero, Jag X-Type V6, Volvo S60 T5.
Any thoughts?

At the risk of being predictable - 156GTA SW. There's one for sale in the AROC mag for £10,500 IIRC, they only came here in 2002 so it's not very old. It's black, and I can testify that the SW version of the GTA, in a dark colour, goes totally unnoticed on the road - and does so quicker than even the latest uber hatches, too, and without a nasty uncultured turbo to blow up either...

Nice - but going through the modifications list on the phone with the insurer is going to cost a smuch as some premiums in the cost of the call alone
Had a seat leon cupra R - fab car - but not particularly economical running costs. Also gets quite noisy after a while - if you're planning long family trips .
Defo go for the Mondeo. Do they do Diesel in ST2000? If not the ST TDCi is a very good bet if you can find one. A lot of car for the money and lots of poke too. Think you can pick one up for around £11k

I had a Cupra as a company car. Just glad I had a company fuel card to go with it... 24mpg was about as good as my average consumption got. I did tend to use the loud pedal a bit but, having said that, when I was really pressing on I was licky to see more than about 18 mpg. Not particularly spacious, as a family car, either. It was fine for me, but I suspect that the boot might not be adequate if you have kids.

My mate (the individual that this thread pertains to) does not like the LCR. When I had mine he was rather critical of the image, plus he really wants something a little bigger.
Some good ideas here though - food for thought.

i would say mondeo st tdci or any 130 ps tdci mondeo , its a crackingly good car to chuck about , avoid the vectra not nearly as good to drive and neithers the passat

Equally, Honda Accord - CDTi Executive would be £12-14K. 2.4 VTEC could be had for similar or less, depending on mileage....but then no big deal, it is a Honda.
Alternatively, Lexus IS200 - reliable and easily done for £10K or under.
Why not register with Autotrader online and then search, and see what comes up.
