Check your Distance

Too much distance between repeater signs jeopardises speeding convictions

A road signage cock up has seen speeding cases against some motorists dismissed. Drivers who had pleaded guilty however won't have their cases reexamined.

One driver successfully challenged a speeding charge after he was prosecuted for speeding on the A689 Stockton Road, in Hartlepool. He'd been caught by a speed camera.

He raised the issue that the 50mph signs were positioned too far apart from each other.

It's not known how long the signs were incorrecly placed, but it is known that the camera has been in place for two years.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "On the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service, the case was not contested in court, although police felt any appeal by the motorist would have failed."

Other motorists who have pleaded not guilty will also have their cases thrown out. Cases already dealt with won't be reopened.

Repeater signs have now been installed in accordance with the necessary regulations.

Does anyone know how far apart the repeater signs should be? Also, should they be different distances apart in other speed limits?

A very similar thing happenned in the village I live in; builders had taken down some repeater signs to allow easier access to a building site, the police set up a speed trap with a laser, caught about 10-15 people. But none of them could be be prosecuted because the repeater signs were taken down!

This stinks, it was either a legally enforcible limit or it wasn't. Those DUPED into confessing to a non-crime should have the points taken off their licences immediately.
