How do games deal with a wide screen monitor? Do you just get the middle portion of the screen used or do games generally support the widescreen aspect? What do older games do when they don't have the required widescreen aspect?

The monitor I'm interested has a native resolution of 1400x900 and the graphics card is a 7900gt with 256Mb

Thanks,

Mark

Depends on the game engine I'm affraid.
Half-Life 2 and the Source engine support widescreen displays.
The Doom3 engine is supposed to support widescreen however Prey won't 'engage' despite being set to my laptops native ressolution and having the 'widescreen' tag set. I've not checked on Doom 3 / Quake 4 to see if this is still the case. This could of course been due to the fact it was the demo version of Prey so.... *shrug*

To be fair most modern games should support widescreen to one degree or another.

Some games like FEAR require you to modify a file with the native resolution, which it'll use each time you run it, unless you try looking for the rez in the Options.
If you do, then you've to redo the change again and relaunch the game.

BF2 will absolutely NOT do widescreen, even with mod'ed file. As soon as you launch to play online, it'll quit.

My son too has an LCD TV with 7900GT - works a charm and gets superb rates even with lots of functions on and set high or fairly high.
