Against South Africa too who they bowled out for 169 !!

BBC said:

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have broken the world record for a Test partnership - hitting an unbeaten 578 between them.

The crowd erupted when the record came courtesy of four leg byes hit off South Africa spinner Nicky Boje.

The pair hugged themselves as Sri Lanka advanced to 592-2 just after lunch on day three of the first Test in Colombo.

That left Sri Lanka 423 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand after South Africa had been bowled out for 169.

The third-wicket pair surpassed the previous best of 576 for the second wicket by fellow-Sri Lankans Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama against India at the Premadasa stadium here in 1997.

Skipper Jayawardene was unbeaten on 278 and Sangakkara was on 273 when they set the new record in the second over after lunch on the third day at the Sinhalese sports club.

They had come to the crease on Thursday evening with Sri Lanka struggling at 14-2.

Both batsman have so far batted for over 10 hours in hot and humid weather in the Sri Lankan capital.

Glad to see that arrogant cock Andre Nel get smacked for lots of runs too.

They finished with a pairing score of 624 before the captain fell. Sri Lanka declared on 756-6. Giving South Africa just over 2 days to either get 587 to win or not get bowled out. They ended the day at 43 without loss.

That was a fantastic sporting spectacle.

I was lucky enough to watch the first half of their play yesterday. It was amazing.

They needed 587 to make Sri Lanka bat again

Seriously a great effort after being 14-2. Boje's figures of 0-221 won't do his average any good.

Slight slip of the keyboard I should have typed "587 to avoid losing"

And to score 434 in your second innings and still be stuffed by an innings and a lot of runs is quite an achievement too!
