Alternator on me Rallye goes kapput
Discussion
The alternator on my Series 2 106 Rallye 1.6 suddenly went (which I thought rather strange), along with the power steering, which was a bugger on the corners.
So called the AA out, but of course no bugger in the AA (multi-meter showed no charge - 11.91 volts) knew the part number for a Rallye and I didn't want to incur a fee for calling some AA eejit out of his bed just for them to say "sorry mate a 60 amp one won't do", so had a scary 15mile journey home on the side lights with the AA van following me and lighting my way.
So what I'm querying is:
Is it possible to get an alternator reconditioned? If so what time scales are we looking at? i.e. time vs. cost
Should an alternator suddenly stop working like that? always had some indication of a problem with the alternator before things stop working.
