How Bizarre....????

Hi all!
Ok, bit of a strange one here...
Since owning my Griff, I've always had a smell of fuel when "making progress"
. After finally getting all of my other problems sorted, the car is now running like a dream and is a real everyday car, but this smell is making any long journey quite unpleasant. Took it over to Austec, who after having a good look over her, diagnosed the carbon (purge) cannistor, as this was where the smell was coming from. So, long story short, went to replace it yesterday, and when I took the old one out (what a fun job that is!) discovered that the wires on the plug don't go anwhere!! So, I've got a purge can, with the two tubes, an electrical connection plugged into the top, then about 2 metres of cable tied together and cut at the end....
So, questions....
1 - Can anyone think why the previous owner would have done this?
2 - Does anyone know where I would find the other ends of this cable? I've taken the loom apart that runs across the front, and there's nothing there. If I run the cable out and follow the front, it would in theory reach into the footwell, does it just connect into the fuse box?
Hope all of this makes sense, still trying to get my round it myself!

The purge valve should have 2 wires coming from it. The grey/yellow wire is a switched ground to the ECU and goes to pin 17 on the ECU plug. The other wire is a switched 12v, the feed is taken from the fuel pump/lambda power relay but any ign switched 12v should do. Can't think of a reason why it would have been cut?

Well, couldn't have asked for a better answer than that, cheers Wildeep!
I probably already know the answer to my next question, by here goes anyway...should I leave this to the pro's, or is it something I could tackle myself? I'm quite happy with electrics, etc, but not so certain about messing around with the ecu....
Right, I've had a nose around in the ECU plug and wiring loom and think I've made sense of it, this is what I've found...
It looks like for some reason the wiring between the purge can and loom has changed (still not sure why it was cut though), and I'm presuming the slate is the slate/yellow and the purple is the white/purple. I can't find where the wires come through into the engine bay, and even if I could I don't rate my chances of finding where the cut was made. So, basically, I was planning on running two new wires into the footwell directly from the purge can, and splice into the existing wires. Does this makes sense??? I know it seems like a bodge, but I figure so long as I document it if I come to sell it, it shouldn't be a problem.
Anyone's thoughts?
