Id quite like to get my hands on a variety of shiny backgrounds, preferably a crease-proof durable surface which cant be stained for shooting food. Any ideas what to use and where to buy it? Ashamedly, I admit I cant think of anything.

In addition to which, I think a marble chopping board would make a nice background.

Would a sheet of clear glass or perspex, with different coloured interchangable paper backings do the job? The amount of reflection would be controlled then by your lighting positions.

I hadnt thought of that - far better than buying a shiny white background.

How about just glossy photo paper?

Too small I think. I was hoping to get something 80cm square, which as a bonus would have been solid. Will see what I can find in town next weekend.

Hmm then I'd have to go with dobbo's suggestion to go with a clear plexiglass or such.

Maybe you could find a broken window somewhere for free or $1 or so that has a large enough fragment to use for your purposes?

I've been looking for a couple of small pieces of perspex for a while now, black and white, about the same size as UKBob, just cannot find it anywhere around me. Anyone know where you can buy relatively small pieces, I really don't want an 8ft by 4ft piece. Also Perspex scratches quite easily, is there something (other than glass) which is a bit tougher?

Well, is there anything wrong with glass? I mean, used window panes seem like they would work well enough...

Well I guess not. I supose putting the right colour paper or material behind it would work. I have used shiny plates in the past to get reflections underneath, so I guess it would work, and probably easier to get hold of than perspex

Not the best shot in the world, was just trying out the idea of microstock a while ago when you firt mentioned it. This was done on a black shiny plate. I guess that would suggest glass will work.

Edited to say, took a load of shots like ths one sunday thought I'd be a stock millionaire over night, then realised it's actually harder than it looks, never did get a good duck shot I was happy with.

Is anyone else wondering whether glass and coloured card, will just end up looking like the product is on a piece of glass, which is over a piece of coloured card...

Wont a flash accentuate the problem?

Its a nice duck Rhubarb
