Has anyone bought the new DVD for their sat-nav from their OPC ?

How much did you pay ?

Was it worth the extra features ? (postcode entry, new maps and routes obviously, and route avoidance)

Or has anyone taken delivery of a 997 this year that had it already with the car ?

I haven't but on my 997s it really annoyed me that neither supported post code entry - so I would definitely say that the upgrade was worth it (assuming that it is not HURRENDOUSLY expensive - I would expect it to be a couple of hundred squids).

Even the shocking (GM/Volvo) nav system on my Aston supported post code entry... and all the £300 units in Halfords do too.

My 996TT is going in tommorrow for the upgrade, I will let you know what I think but I am so frustrated with not being able to just put in a postcode it has to be done. Unfortunately the traffic report system only works in Europe and not here yet!

Hmm, is that the TMC system? If so, it works fine in the UK with beemer sat nav systems after the latest upgrade.

It works on the 997 but not the 996, without a whole new unit!

That's p1ss poor. The first beemer widescreen DVD based unit was the same, i.e. work in Europe only, until flashed with an update disk.

TMC works great on both my girlfriends 987 and my 997 - both Model Year 06 cars ie later than Aug 05. (Need to remember to set the route to be dynamic) Just tested a Cayenne Turbo S and noticed it on that too...

The postcode entry is fine too, although it doesn't take you down to the final 2 characters ie: Of a full postcode AB12 3CD, you can put in AB12 3 and it would then narrow the search down to the list of streets/areas with that postcode mask - still need to pick the street. Works fine for me though.

Sorry to get to this a bit late. My October 2005 997S has the factory fitted sat nav.

First, it is much better than the one fitted to my previous Porsche an 02 996TT (and infinitely better than the dismal effort in the DB9. The best feature of which was that it folded away out of sight, where it remained for as long as I had the car.)

The one in the 997S does post code entry. Unhelpfully there is no mention of this in the manual but just start to enter the post code and after a while the machine realises you're not dyslexic and offers the option. It misses off the last two letters but if you check the map the pointy arrow thingy is pretty much spot on. The DVD system is much faster than the CD and retrieves info very quickly eg change scale etc. I use it to navigate just like you'd use a map. It also has all sorts of stuff about the destination so if you need a hotel it will find one and give you the phone number which if you have the phone module you can then dial directly. All round its pretty neat.

I also think the presentation of the map is pretty good and much better than previous versions. It seems to come with TMC built in and shows all jams (albeit that info is likely to be time delayed)

It may not be worth the best part of £2k but I still fall for it and pay up every time ('cept its free with the 997TT due shortly)
