Rockingham in-car

Bit of in-car from the Rockingham trackday:

Was keeping the speed down on the banking a bit to keep an eye on oil pressure - the joys of not running an accusump!

You can do a search in Pistonheads TV. Much easier than me linking them all and that way, they are kept up to date!

very nice mate! and i love the sound
how does your old GTR and the Can-Am compare to each other???
which do you prefer??
thanks Chris.

Well, as I'd built them fit for different purposes, the GTR was far more hardcore, but that actually made it less enjoyable to drive.
The Can-Am has been a real revelation. It's great on the road as a cruiser and a bruiser, but what surprised me most was just how good it was on track. I needed more setup time in the GTR to get it the way I wanted, but the Can-Am has been brilliant from the get-go.

Trust me, if you can tell the difference between a GTR and a Can-Am chassis, then give Frank Williams a call as you're in the wrong job
As for a more powerful Can-Am - no, never. I simply cannot see the point. Round Rockingham for instance, the car was more capable than I was (need more tracktime to even that one out). Putting a more powerful engine in would probably give you more straight line speed, but would be harder to rein in around the bends. It's a question of balance.
Personally, I prefer to drive a less powerful car at 9/10ths than a monster at 5/10ths. Having an extra 200+hp that you can never use, short of at a drag strip or runway (but let's face it, the time you'll use it most is bragging rights in the pub), just seems pointless to me now.
I find it hugely amusing at trackdays where you get people in Radicals/Juno's etc. with slicks and wings, just so they can flatter their own ego by driving around everything else (and even then it's not always the case). Well, so what? That proves nothing other than the fact you've had to buy a far more capable machine than you are to be 'fast'. Stick them in a race with similar cars and watch them flounder.
Well, I'd rather be the fastest driver in the slowest car, than the other way round.

Cracking vid. Thanks for posting... Didn't realise that rockingham was such a fun looking circuit. Enough bends to keep it interesting but lots of quick bits to let the car stretch its legs.
Could be worth the long trek south...
Could be worth the long trek south...Agreed Dave, was a very pleasant surprise. Overall, a great mix of bits to play on. The monstrous grandstands are awesome in the background too and once that V8 starts reverberating off the concrete walls

Hey Stig. Love the video. Keep'em com'in. I have turned into a total track slut...actual or video capture. Doesn't matter!
I have been getting a lot of track time in lots of different cars since they made me an instructor. The fastest thing so far was a 1992 Winston Cup NASCAR Ford Thunderbird owned by a NASCAR champion - Alan Kulwicki. Next fastest was a 2006 Corvette Z06 with slics. After that was a Mitsubishi Evolution 9 with slics. Then, there have been a host of Vettes, Mustangs, and Porsches, and some other Japanese imports.
Just looking at the video, I can tell the CANAM is a great handling car. The ease with which you make those passes is astonishing. Can't wait to see the flames. Are you headed back to "The Rock" soon? Do they change the course around to provide a different experience?

Video looks great, I've not been to Rockingham yet, I though the straights would be to long for my gearing on my little 7, what speed where you geting up to?
I normal run slicks on track days, ok the grip is better, but I find them more progressive, less chance of being spat off the track and in to some tyres or wall in this case, not only this but a 2nd hand set of slicks is about £40-80, use them and bin them.
How did your tyres hold up, Stig?
Has anyone run slicks on their Ultima, with standard red poly bushes, how does it fair?

Builder - like all racing, smooth is fast. I'm pretty easy going on my cars, rather than being the 'scruff of the neck' style of driver. The Ultima responds well to this.
They do have several track layouts at Rockingham, this was the longest version they do. Was a great mix.
Dr. Peter - Tyres were absolutely fine. I only managed the morning session before the dizzy gave up the ghost, but the tyres showed little wear. Of course, that also depends on how you drive it! Lots of sideways action, late braking and lockups would increase this dramatically.

Hi Chris great video. Very impressed by quality of filming (sorry and driving) does video have some form of anti vibration mount or is it smoothed out by electronics.
What was the noise limits or is Rockingham non restricted.
Cheers

The camera is on a manfrotto mount that clamps to the rollbar. It does have anti-shake built into the camera, but the mounting is very stable (and the track very smooth!).
It was a 105db day, no idea what noise level the car was putting out - but didn't get black flagged

Nothing wrong with having monster power, just difficult to use it all!
