Does anybody know whether it is possible to open up a password protected Excel spreadsheet without knowing the password - are there any ways around it ?

If anyone does have a method, please could they contact me through my profile. I know it seems a strange request but I do have a very valid reason for needing to do this.

Many thanks

Penny

Sent through profile, but as it is easily available on the web, I don't see a reason not to post on the thread....

Cheers Adrian, and to the others who have contacted me through my profile.
I have tried that one and can't seem to get it to work even on an empty file that I've protected myself. Guess I must be doing something wrong. Will try again today.
Cheers

Try this instead:

Advanced Office XP Password Recovery. There's nothing it hasn't been able to open for me. Some passwords will take a while, but most of the dullards here use simple passwords that are crackable in under a minute

you can download excel password crackers. Generally takes about 20 minutes or so (to crack the password not download them. The actual program is dead small).

[small]I *think* that if you open it using OpenOffice it automatically strips out the password.

Could be worth a shot - www.openoffice.org for a download![/edit]

Just tried it... seems I've been misinformed!

Sorry!

Right, if Office 2k, Office XP or less, any password breaker will work - you'll have to find one that will break more than 3 characters as most are 'paid for' software.

However - and this is important - Office 2003 onwards is very much harder to break the passwords on as they use a different encyrption algorithm for passwords.

There ARE password breakers out there for Office 2003 - but they take much longer...
