........goes through the window, can anybody pleeeeeease tell me how to successfully install ActiveSync 4.1 from the CD-ROM that comes with the friggin' thing.

The story so far;

Dropped my XDA II in a great big puddle, lost my SD card and damaged it. Went to o2 shop and upgraded (hmmm) to an o2 XDA Mini S, complete with ActiveSync 4.1 and Outlook 2002 (which I already have).

So I installed, ActiveSync 4.1 or so I thought. So I start up ActiveSync and my computer gives me the old error message and I'm given the option to notify Microsoft or not...blah blah blah. My XDA meanwhile tells me that I should install 4.1 to run ActiveSync.....hmmm. So I tries to reinstall 4.1 from the CD-ROM, but the same happens again. So I uninstall ActiveSync completely by Add/Remove programs and proceed to completely reinstall 4.1.....same again.

A quick Google, confirms that there is a 4.2 version available through the Microsoft Download website, so I download and run this.......still the same happens. At this point, the phone is in serious danger.

I ring o2 customer services and wish to God I really had taken that cyanide pill this morning! I'm asked if I have soft-reset the phone, to which I confirm that I have. I'm told to hard-reset the phone, so proceed to hard-reset the phone and after 10 minutes of waiting it seems to boot up again OK, but with the manufacturer settings. Meanwhile I'm uninstalling 4.2 from my laptop because I'm told by Ali that it's under development and better to stick with 4.1.....I reinstall 4.1....again.

The hard-reset fixes absolutely nothing....as I feared and ActiveSync still will not run properly. I'm told by Ali that it is a Microsoft problem and I should ring them.

I ring Microsoft and am put through to somewhere in India....you can imagine what happens next! I'm told to go Start>My Computer>Properties and to read the serial number, as it's got an OEM number, I'm told that I'll need to talk to technical but it is a "pay" service. I tell the lovely indian lady that I am NOT paying for any support. There is nothing wrong with XP Home that I am running, my previous XDA worked quite happily with the previous version of ActiveSync and so it is nothing to do with XP, IMHO.

I'm currently awaiting a phone call from the lovely Microsoft where I'm sure I'll be told that I should take the phone back to the shop where I bought it from. Probably to replace it with another one that will have the same problem.

So......I trust you guys, do any of you know what the problem might be?

Thanks ever so much in advance.

Mornin'!

I had one of these, and from what I could gather, Windows Mobile 2005 wont sync via USB!

There were a few potential fixes (like install version 4.2 of ActiveSync), but none I tried made any difference whatsoever.

I resorted to using bluetooth to sync, and it worked perfectly the first time.

I'm surprised that MS haven't updated ActiveSync yet, if its that common a problem!

Thanks for the reply,

I'm not sure I can sync. via bluetooth as my laptop doesn't have a bluetooth facility?!

I've tried syncing via IR but I'm just presented with the "install 4.1" sync. error message. I'm perplexed, totally pissed off and very close to calling it a day and sending the er back.

Sync has to be invoked from the phone, if you try it the other way around it wont work.

If you haven't tried it already:

Right-click on the ActiveSync tool-tray icon and select "Connection Settings..." from the context menu.
Make sure "Allow USB connections" is checked.
Try connecting again.

Shame you're nowhere near Uxbridge, the manager of the O2 shop there is a developer for the XDAs and he knows the things inside-out...

Put simply - the problem seems to be the XDA does not recognise the activesync software as 4.1. Despite the fact that when the check "About Microsoft Activesync" it clearly describes the version being used as ActiveSync 4.1.0.

Version makes no difference to be honest as far as I have found.

WM5 I've had connected to all sorts of versions.

They're on smack.

Is the USB port known to work?

Have you tried initiating the sync from the device, rather than from the PC?

The USB port is fine.

Can you perhaps talk me through what you mean by syncing from the device? At the moment my device is connected and I have the green activesync logo showing in my task bar.

If I do Start>Activesync>Menu i'm not offered any options ie. they are all ghosted(?) out.

The activesync logo is green?

That means its connected and both sides of activesync know of each others existence.

If it wasnt syncing the logo would be greyed out.

Go into ActiveSync on the phone via the start menu and hit sync

You do have some sync boxes checked on the PC I take it, be they contacts, appointments or tasks...

It could be that its connected and not set to do anything...

Actually, open activesync on the pc, go to the tools menu and select explore pocket pc, do you get an explorer like interface?

My problem is such that I can't actually open activesync, when I click to open it, nothing happens I just get a sound as though I'm minimizing something.

So when you double click on the systray icon on the bottom right (click the little arrow if its disappeared) you dont get the activesync window appearing?

Correct. I'm afraid nothing happens.

I can right click the icon and open connection settings as you can see, but not activesync itself.

If the device is connected and I then pull the cable out, thereby disconnecting it. If I then re-apply the cable, I get the synchronize error message on the XDA - "to synchronize this device you must install ActiveSync 4.1 on your desktop computer"

It's not been mentioned so far (probably because it's too bloody obvious, but...) have you tried rebooting without the device connected and then re-attach the phone? I've been totally frustrated with various generations of Palm devices and Nokia phones and recall that the most productive thing to do with them was reboot the pc and then reconnect the device then reinitiate the sync from the device. Apologies if this is redundant advice.
