Just been watching program on Bravo that featured this Richard Petty wipeout in the 1988 Daytona 500..... spectacular stuff and amazingly he walked away on crutches with just an injured ankle!!

Eclipsed by Geoff Bodine's effort, I feel...

Still astounds me to this day that he survived.

That is incredible!

It's a testament to the construction of the vehicles and safety measures in place that both drivers were able to survive!!

The one I always remember (although not Nascar) was Stan Fox's crash in turn 1 of the very first lap of the 1995 Indianapolis 500 I was watching it live at the time too. Can't find the TV film though there is a poor amateru video on youtube that doesn't catch anything of it.

I remember that Stan Fox accident...some of the stills of that are astounding. The other accidents which stick in my memory (other than the obvious ones) are Johnny Herbert's 1988 F3000 crash, Mark Blundell at Rio, Zanardi's accident at Lausitzring and Kenny Brack's at TMS a few years ago. Zanardi's is still especially harrowing to watch. There's an amazing (and very gruesome) still image of that crash that makes it all the more difficult to believe he survived.

Of the many horrific images of accidents etched in my memory including the accidents of Alex Zanardi, Greg Moore and Johnny Herbert another one that really stands out is the image of the aftermath of Martin Donnellys accident at Jerez in 1990

The thing I find upsetting about the Greg Moore fatality is that had the car not been flipped, I'm fairly sure he'd have lived. One of those crashes where you unfortunately knew straight away the worst had happened. The other one which sticks in my mind is Barrichello's at Imola.

This is a pretty amazing escape too :-
