Hi all,

When I start my Chim, just before it fires there is a fairly loud squeek like noise. Sometimes it's louder than others. I had a 12k service about a month ago and the boys at Offord never mentioned it, but I am just wondering if it's something to be concerned about?
Any ideas what this could be?

Cheers

Could it be the fan belt slipping a bit?

It the noise is just before it fires its not a belt noise.... Sound more in keeping with a starter bendix not returning fast enough.

I think I know the sound you refer to, I have something similar. On mine it certainly is not the fan belt it's a very short lived metal binding noise. Nothing serious just dry surfaces on some external part of the engine. It's so short lived it would be very difficult to locate.

Mine has the opposite problem.

Quiet on startup and then starts to squeek a bit when warm and idling or driving over lumpy roads. Very hard to tell where the hell the noise is coming from and especially embarassing when waiting at the lights.

Yeah, I think tvrbob's got the same problem and as you say, trying to locate is not gonna be an easy job!! Long as it's nothing to worry about it's not a problem

Two things to check:
1: The bearing in the tensioner on the "fan" belt, actually the belt that drives all the ancillary equipment. I had this go squeaky on me.
2: The engine oil level. If it is low the hydraulic valve gear can squeak at startup.

I have the same! Sounds like a squeek made when letting air out of a balooon. Lats fro 0.5 to 1 second. I guess at an airlock in my power steering pump......however I stand to be corrected. Funnily it came back from a service with the noise. I believe it is more annoying than worrying.
