Knocked off my Bike yesterday
Discussion
Driving down a duel inner-city duel carrigeway in Leeds City Centre. I'm in the outside lane coming up behind a slow travelling Vauxhall Tigra in the inside lane....just as I enter her blind spot area she decides she wants to take a right turn across my lane down a street .
I had zero time to brake and hit the side of her car about 30mph!! I had a helmet/gloves and jeans/jacket on [only nipping to the shop so didn't put my leathers on ]
Anyway I'm pretty damaged! Knees and forearms are both killing , but worst is the left hand side of my midrift/chest.
To those that will say I should have worn my leathers...they wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference ..... my injuries are from the initial impact on the ground [i.e. midrift]. [My knees and elbows are only superficial grazing which admittedly the leathers would have stopped]
The leathers I have don't offer any real impact protection in that area so wouldn't have helped. My jeans or top didn't tear right through....the helmet saved my life though as I did wack it with some force and the gloves also saved my hands!

Bad luck, there really are some numpties out there. Problem is so many people take the car test but really have no interest in the art of driving well, just wanting to go from A to B. The number of drivers I see driving like total cnuts and it's very obvious that they don't have a clue they are driving badly
Hope you make a speedy recovery.

Not sure if the bike will be econimically repairable? Can anyone offer an opinion? The damage is worse than in the pics:
- Wing Mirror
- Front Dicky
- Rear Dicky
- N/S headlight
- Upper and lower fairing [N/S]
- Engine Casing
- N/S foot rest hanger
- Rear fairing needs painting
- Rear grab handrail [N/S]
- Rear hugger
- And the rear sub-frame appears bent [the seat/tail is no longer in line with the rear wheel]
- Rear wheel axle/nut/cotter pin
- Bar end
What do peeps think? [Its worth approx £2500]

Aside from the engine bits, I managed to buy all fairings inc back section, mirrors and front headlight and housing for £800 after I crashed my 2006 GSXR 1000... It's worth spending the time and having a good hunt around on ebay. Good luck and sorry to hear about your accident. Rob.
Estimate sounds on the low side, it will probably be a write off.
Make VERY sure that you -
- go to the doctors about every last scratch
- log all time off work
- get estimates for all kit/clothing
- get a solicitor on the case, hopefully your insurance policy included legal cover
Good luck and good to hear you got off fairly lightly (like not in hospital/the morgue).

Apologies for coming accross a bit unsympathetic - but this is a public forum and I guess the reason you have posted here is to get some sympathy/comments going . . .
I have to say that riding without ALL the proper gear is just STUPID - why would you do that?
It sounds like the damage to you, isnt too bad and could have been a lot worse - maybe you have learnt your lesson - remember that EVERYONE on the road is out to kill you - so wear the proper gear - or you might live to regret it!!!
Have seen so many bikers in shorts/T-Shirts etc + loads of couples where the bloke driving is in full gear and the miss's is in bloody jeans - STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!

Get off your high horse Kushy. Many people regularly ride without full gear on if they're only nipping out. I know I do. I consider people who put on full one-piece leathers with back protectors to ride to the shops on to be utter arses but it's their choice and I wouldn't dream of saying anything to them.

I haven't posted for sympathy...i've posted to increase awareness and get feedback on the damage to my bike.
You've obviously not even read the post....I'm fully aware of when I should and shouldn't put my leathers and back protector on. It would have taken me longer to get them on/off than it would have to get down the shop and back!!
I rode the bike accodingley [I.E. 30mph and below] and took extra care....if you read the post you would have seen :
"To those that will say I should have worn my leathers...they wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference ..... my injuries are from the initial impact on the ground [i.e. midrift]. [My knees and elbows are only superficial grazing which admittedly the leathers would have stopped]"
John
I HAVE read your post - several times now and my comments are not meant as a personal attack - but its still STUPID to ride a bike without wearing all of the proper equipment.
What would you rather have done in hindsight - speant some time putting on your leathers or sustaining the injuries you did + the damage to your bike!!!
As for a "sturdy jacket" I take it that it wasnt a proper biking jacket then? - Thats even more stupid!
Bear in mind this - if you had no protective clothing on and you sat on your bike and it tppled over upon you without you even moving it - it weighs up to 200KG - imagine the damage that can do - yet alone while you are moving?!?!?!?
I still say that riding without the proper gear is TOTAL STUPIDITY - car drivers are generally useless - arguing the toss with me will do you no good in your curret damaged state - you do what you feel is best for you - its a free world.
Its just my opinion!

I didnt mean there would be no damage to the bike - jeez - I meant its a double whammy - bones and bike! One could have been prevented/limited!
Listen its a public forum - if you post comments/experiences here you have to expect all sorts of replies - not just sympathy/car driver hatred!!!
Move on!

If you're pootling down the shops then leathers are not going to be any good. They're good for staying together in a slide and not wearing through. They dont' stop you breaking bones from impacts and they don't stop 200kgs of bike landing on you from hurting.
If you believe this then you're relying too much on them. Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
