As a man who specialises in figures (both types) I have been pondering some of the official Maclaren F1 times and to me they don't all add up.

Let me explain,
The F1 was independantly timed with a 0-100-0mph of 11.5 seconds and held the record at that time (outstanding performance for a road car).

Recently the R500 beat it marginally with a 0-100-0mph of 11.42 seconds.

What I don't understand is how therefore the F1 can do 0-100mph in a quoted 6.3 seconds.

The R500 was around 8.5 seconds from 0-100, (thats over 2.2 seconds slower) even the saloon cars were within a second of the R500's braking times

Any comments, facts or observations to help me ponder.

Isnt the F1 heavier, hence more time to slow down?

I dont know, just a guess!

Matt.

Lot Lighter than the Lambo and Porsche, and about the same as the Zonda, all of which were well within a second of the R500.

Even the Audi estate tested was within a second on the brakes!

Did the F1 have horific brakes! I always thought they were supposed to mega good (were they carbon or somthing?).

The F1 did not manage a time of 6.2 for the 0-100 dash on the day of the 0-100-0 test?

That would explain alot of the difference. Also, on the 0-100-0 test they always go over the 100 barrier, if I recall, didn't the F1 go way past. That would mean longer accelerating and longer on the brakes too.

Unless you are going to have exacting standards ..... driver, road surface, wind/weather conditions and all the other variables, looking at the cold figures is pointless. The R500 may have been a grippy surface? The F1's may have been slippy etc. It all makes those tiny differences.

I'm trying to get at some facts. i.e were the times for different cars?
I know the 6.3 sec time was an LM model that had a very limited run.
We all know that like it or not the F1 is a benchmark for supercars, and my suspision is that if all the other times are for an 'ordinary' F1 then the LM model could have gone below 10 seconds in it's 0-100-0 dash.

If there are other threads about this I will be please to read them and not go over soiled ground!

Andy

A R500 runs Avon ACB10 tyres, a cut slick and E marked. There is even a super soft compound which lasts 20 miles for hill climbs, which is oh so sticky

IIRC the car that did the 6.3 run was an UNDERpowered development car (K40MCL>?) McLarens road cars were said to be quicker still.

Macca did not have carbon brakes..i read recently in evo i beleive that Murray said they tested them extensively, but the technology at the time was too far way from being able to use then on a road car.

Who's going to be the first Ultima owner to shatter the record?
I'm going to video my own instrumented testing of my GTR in a couple months. Anyone else got the nads to do this?

Testing will be done at Byron Dragway west of Chicago. I'll use my Vericom performance computer to dial it in on some deserted country roads near the corn fields of Dekalb Illinois. Top speed testing may be done at an open road event in Nebraska.

I don't actually beleive an Ultima will 'Shatter' the record,

However I think I've already proved that it could beat or match it......but if an F1 is actually capable of a sub 10sec 0-100-0mph time, I think we are out of the loop but would still be fun trying.

Still doesn't make sense, what people are saying is that the fastest recorded F1 was actually down on power and slower than latter cars that couldn't match the performance times.
Did they do the 0-100-0 timing in the wet then?

jschwartz, if and when you come to Nebraska to the Mid-Americamotoplex or any where near lincoln or omaha give a shout in this forum so I can get a closer look at an Ulitma. I love to see your car do some fast laps at the new track.
