Whirring noise 2...

Hi all, I've recently come back from a long trip where the cars been driven kinda hard with quite a large load. Its made a whirring noise at lower speeds before now, but since coming down into second gear at highish revs(4k) its suddenly making the whirring alot more now all along the rev range. This only happens in the forward gears, not in reverse and I've asked elsewhere on the net to no avail.
Any ideas? This is kinda cheeky, but you lot are hands on and know more than other forums.

Already been rumbled by the ever helpful Joolz 
- sorry about that, yes its not a Cerbera...
but running on Julain64's BMW suggestion that generally cars wise we are best asking here, I thought I'd give it a go!!
The noise doesnt seem to be from either side, but its hard to tell as there is another problem with it thats making enough noise as well (GRRR!!!) its present in all forward gears and doesnt seem to be worse in any of them, its just equally bad. Theres no noise in reverse though... im clueless as to what it is. The speedo/ rev counter doesnt seem to be effected and theres nothing obvious to indicate where the fault is underneath... any ideas?
Hopefully no miserable moderators will come here and move it out of the Cerb forum into somewhere else. This is *the* forum for techy questions IMHO.

Jules is probably right (as ever), but just in case does the noise change at a constant speed in different gears, and does it go away with light application of the brake.
I.e. could a wheel bearing be another possibility.
Knowing what car would help a lot

Its a smart car.
The whine gets faster with revs, not really louder I dont think... then again its quieter at low revs, so I guess it does? lol... even im confused.
Thanks for your help so far guys... whatever it is, I'll have the spare parts, just need to know what to take off and fit! (the joys of having a spare car in parts!)
Edit: if it was the diff, why would it not be present in reverse?
Also, if its the box... why has it not really seemed to effect the way the car drives? (not really been driving it in my usual spirited manor though since the problems started - unfortunately I have to keep driving it as my Mum messed up her leg on holiday and the smart is the only car big enough for her to get in/out of without bending her leg...
