I got a D50 about a year ago now, and some months ago I received a notice about a recall for the battery (of which mine was one that needed replacing).

Originally, they wanted me to send them the battery, then wait 2 months for them to process it, test it, and return it. I had the most unbelieveable discussion with some woman at Nikon about this.

I asked if they'd send me the replacement first, so I could go on holiday and use the camera, etc, etc .... no was the answer. I had to seend them the battery first - then wait and wait.

Anyway - I never sent it back, and clean forgot about it ..... until yesterday.

I received an email from Nikon to tell me that my original call was still open, and that they would close it in 30 days time unless I action it. So I emailed them, telling them that I'd send the battery in, at the end of September (when I guess I'll need the camera least). And as a P.S - I cheekily asked if they'd like to send me a replacement battery first - so I'd have continued use of the camera.

And I've just got a reply to confirm that they're sending me the replacement battery first!

Good on ya Nikon .. (although a year late)

Well, true to their word the battery arrived this morning.

I'll charge it up and make sure it works ok before I send my original.

For reference, probably more particularly to 2nd-hand owners, here's some background info, noting that it applies to the D100, D70 and D50 (I assume the D70s too).

Better safe than sorry ... not funny if it did explode or burnt the house down.

But push for them to send you a replacement battery first. As above - they originally told me "up to 2 months"!

Good luck.

They replaced mine very quickly. But it's always a good idea to have a spare anyway...

To be honest I guessed that they might swap them over quickly, and the '2 months' was purely to cover their themselves - but the thought that I could 'possibly' be without for 2 months was unbearable.

Especially considering batteries always run out whilst you're using them.
