On Sunday the screen on my A117S went blank and the computer seemed to shut down. I switched off using the button but when I turned it back on there was nothing at all on the screen (no "Vaio" etc). The green 'on' light comes on and the orange disc light flashes for a few seconds. Then they all go off for 1 or 2 seconds. Then the green 'on' light comes back on along with the flashing orange disc light for a couple of seconds. The fan also comes on for a couple of seconds at this stage. But still nothing on the screen and no response from any button (except that the mute button will light and unlight on pressing). The CD drive tray will not open.

I googled for some help and came across www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/?o=460 and it seems others have experienced similar problems.

Any ideas? I've sent a message to Sony's e-support website today but haven't heard back yet (I'm about 10 months out of warranty). Not sure whether to send it back to them for repair or use an independent - has anyone any views on www.laptopsupport.co.uk/? Seem reasonably priced and they package and pick the thing up which is tempting.

Grateful for thoughts.

Nick

Interestingly enough I had exactly the same issue with my Compaq lappy this morning. I plugged it into my plasma and found it was stuck in some weird standby mode, and was outputing video to the VGA port but not to the inbuilt screen.

10 seconds held on the power button reset it sufficiently to reboot and recover.

Don't imagine this will solve it for you but has to be worth a try!

I have the same sort of issue with mine, other (possibly more advanced) signs have been:
1) switches off (hard off, not shut down) sometimes if slight preasure is applied across the diagonal
2) when I switch it off sometimes it will actually not switch off (looks like it has) and then when I reach into the PC bag it is hot as heck from the processor etc

Having spoken with various people the concensous seems to be a dry joint somewhere on the motherboard as this appears to be a common cause of a wide range of issues on VAIO laptops - replacement cost c. 4-500. As such I suspect that I will be buying a cheap laptop (dual core dell etc) and treating it as disposable when it goes south in a year or so! God what a waste!

PS mind you if the bunch that you find seem to be good I might just give them a go
