Can you help me i am a lorry driver and i am looking for a good sat nav system and i have been told that tom tom go 300 is good what do you think??????

How far to you take your truck, as if you wander into Europe (or further) you'll ideally want the maps to cover the routes you take.

The TomTom 300 has recently been replaced, and the UK only model they do now is the TomTom One, going up from there is the GO 510 with basic coverage of Europe, the GO 710 with full coverage of Europe, then the GO 910 with Europe, the US and Canada if you ever fancy a jaunt across the Atlantic.

The TomTom units are well respected and should be ideal for you - also worth considering are the equivalent products from Garmin and NavMan - your best bet might be to visit a local Halfords and have a play with each of them to see which you prefer in use, as it can be quite subjective, for instance the unit I prefer and use all the time is very small and has no touch screen - I find this perfect for me as the size means it isn't a diversion, but others hate this and prefer the large wide-screens of the new TomTom units which I find too bulky.

I had exactly the same question and I already have a Tom Tom 500. I wrote to the TomTom support group to find out if there was an update that I could buy for my system that would allow me to avoid low bridges, weight limits and narrow lanes, but unfortunately thte is not and this is the main problem with the system, it routes you the best way for a car, and this is not always the best way for an HGV, sure I can look for the signs for the low bridges etc, but the system still routs you on roads that are not always the best for an HGV,having said that I still use it and find it fantastic to use. If anyone knows of a third party that does an HGV update for the TOM TOM, that would be fantastic.

I have a 910, as you have said it does not cover low bridges and small lanes, but none do. I do find it perfect as it has a remote and you can do your stuff while driving instead of leaning over (windscreen a long way away!).

Mind you, I dont often go over to north america!

Out of interest, do any of these navs show width restrictions ?

I had a very embarassing moment in chelsea a few weeks ago, having to do a 90 point turn in a narrow lane coz of a width restriction I didnt know about !!

22 foot lorry Grinds chelsea to a halt !!

Never heard so many different horns !!

Just found this, the Snooper Indigo CV It's got navigation, height indication and speed camera detection. It's quite pricey at £400 but with all those features I guess it's worth it. according to the specs though it only gives you advance wrning of bridges. It doesn't actually not route around them. Still, better than nothing.

I think this is the one that Hunter pointed him at.

For the truck user, they can be a pain in the ar*e, simply because the height and weight limit info is not available in the map data, and there's no way of putting limits into the software.

I have heard of a PC based package that some transport (mis)managers use to work out vehicle routes, which have that data built in. However, it's expensive (costing in the realm of £thousands).

For right now, it's the best off the shelf there is.

HI guys - there is a solution out there for most sat nav units as an add-on that gives you visual, voice and diversions around low bridges see; www.hgvsolutions.com

Its got 3000 low bridges (twice the AA atlas) and also other data - truckstops and lay-bys to name a few. They also do a keyfuels sites - for HGV's thats very useful since morrisons dropped the canopies below 11ft !

THE snooper I had a look at - and its expensive and all it does is warn on screen about the bridge- thats all nothin the other solutions above doesnt do - perhaps better. With the tomtom version you can also plan routes and see every bridge on your route with its height. I would check it out before shelling on a snooper. tomtom one + bridge back = £200 do the math as they say

Enter the width, height and weight of the vehicle with load and the system will calculate a safe route for the restrictions. The route will avoid low bridges, narrow paths or bridges with weight restriction... more here

You need a Tom TOM GO 5150 Live
This gives height width and weight restrictions and plans with the slower acceleration and top speed of HGVs in mind
Live traffic is real time traffic info with reroutes..
Also available just now with Maps for life, so always up to date
Currently about £320
Tom Tom are the best (IMHO)
You can get the Truck maps on SD card to use in (some of the) other Tom Tom units at about £120, but they don't work properly in all Tom Toms, and they only use the map (ie not special "truck" route planning algorithms

Things have changed a lot since he asked the question too. My Smart phone runs an App called Navfree and it has vehicle types to choose from as follows. Car, Motorcycle, Cycle, RV/Lorry, Transport truck, Delivery truck.
A fairly wide range of options.
