hi all

well, after much deliberation and some very useful advice on this site (thank you ), i have just bought a 30D. can't wait to get going with it, - just got to get the CF cards through the post.

now i got it with the kit lens (18-55) and, while i'm sure i'll want more lenses later, it will be a while off. so, now i need a case to carry my baby in. any suggestions would be great. it should be protective (preferably soft but hard at a pinch), water resistant and easy to manage. all that will go in it is the camera, a spare battery and the spare CF card.

i have followed threads on cases and the consensus seems to be - buy bigger than you need, you stuff will expand to fill it, but i'd like to get a small one for now. as i get other lenses, i will get other, larger, cases then.

thanks again - won't be long before i'll be boring you with pictures of all and sundry .

regards
david

many thanks - i was eyeing the lowepro range - looks great, but there are so many models. would it be best to just take the camera down and try different ones out to see which suits?

thanks again

First, you'll have to choose whether you want a backpack or shoulder bag. I have both and choose one depending on where I'll be going. Obviously backpack is more comfortable if you are walking for a long distance.

AW bags are handy for rainy days, but non-AW bags are quite water resistant too. I've been in heavy rain many times but gear stayed dry each time.

If you don't have a lot of accessories to carry, then Top Loader may be a good choice for you.

I'd say, go to the shops and check different bags (and remember to take all your equipment with you to test them). Good luck!

ok - good advice, thanks.

will get down to the shops and try the various kinds out. i think the shoulder bag will be right as we don't walk any great distance.toploader looks good too.

I had the same dilemma, I ended up buying a crumpler ben pizza xl as I can fit the 350d, kit lens and the 200mm zoom and a battery grip. There is room to squeeze another lens in there (I have a 50mm f1.8 on order) and I suspect I'm not going to carry the battery grip about when I get a spare battery so it'll see me ok for a bit.

When I get more kit I'll get a bigger bag and use which ever bag is appropriate for what I'm doing that day.

I've got a Lowepro Topload zoom which works well for me. If I want a lightweight walkabout bag with one lens it's small and compact, or if I want to carry more lenses I can clip them on the side. It's well made and also has a waterproof cover, which I use to keep the dust out of the bag! Another advantage is that when travelling it easily fits in a conventional rucksack so bag doesn't look obviously full of camera gear.

When I get another lens I'll need a bigger bag but I'll keep the Toploader aswell.

Well I'm an idiot as I've just realised it's a Nova2 I've got not a Nova3.

I wondered why the picture showed so much kit when I couldn't fit that much in mine!

hi ben -thanks for the update. i think i will go with the toploader as it looks ideal (big enough for camera with lens attached, but small enough to be easily carried), but thanks for your offer.

Talking of Toploader, I'm thinking of getting one that can hold 1D mkII with 24-105 IS attached. Does anybody know which one will be most suitable? And is there enough space left for a flashgun?

I've just bought the 75 AW and it takes my 20d with battery pack attached and a 100-400 lens no problem, its huge!! I'd say you want the 65 AW for the 24-105, as far as I can tell the TLZ 1 / 2 / mini are for smaller cameras. I've just bought that lens also so I'm ordering a 65 AW as well.
I think I'd get a flashgun in the front of the 75AW or you can partition the lenght of it, with a 65AW I'd guess you would need one of the sliplock pouches to add on to the side.
I'm very impressed with my one though, its well worth the money.
Gareth.
