I was interested to note that new PC's are now coming with on-board instruction manuals rather than the printed version.

There is really useful stuff such as, "If the screen is black, do this" or "if the PC fails to start do that" .

ermmmmmmmmmmm how do I read the b***** instructions if the screen is black or the PC won't start?

Cheap cost saving measure? For a piece of kit costing £730 I expected a little more.

Do they expect us to print the whole 140 page pdf, just in case?

Well, the flip side is that it saves a lot of trees....
For example, we've just ordered in 50 PCs. I'm very glad that we didn't get instructions manuals for every one of them as it would have been a total waste.

Whilst it saves trees and storeage space when your bulk buying, the real reason is that it saves the company money.
The PC business has become utterly cut-throat with minimal margins per unit, anything that can eek a bit more profit and well one PDF as a manual, this is true throughout the industry regadless of low-end/midrange/high end kit.

Which is why motherboards etc often come in 2 versions. Full retail and OEM. Full retails has all the manuals, bells, whistles, cables, screws etc. OEM has an antistatic bag and (if you are lucky) a box.

A few years ago, I ordered a full "software refresh" for nearly 50 RS/6000 AIX servers and IBM sent a full set of manuals with each one. They came on about 5 pallets. They didn't want them back, so I kept one set and put the rest straight in the skip.

Dunno... most OEM parts I've brought have been, as you say, light on goodies, but have had a pamphlet and fixings inside the plain brown box. The only annoyance is when you order on-line and think your getting Retail.... and the bloody OEM shows up instead grrrr.
