Untill quite recently I would save said CRT's are better pureley for image quality, but having seen some of the recent top end offerings from Dell etc. the gap is definatley closing.
Then again with a CRT you're much more free to tweak the resolution without it looking crap, and theres still the viewing angle problem. They might market a viewing angle of 140 degrees or whatever but I find that once you get on an angle, the quality drops off long before the ultimate limit. Its not an on/off thing at the limit. So I suppose that said, CRT's are maybe more usable if you've got the space for them.
All IMO of course...

Guys, appreciate the general comments on the merits or CRT's vs TFTs, but I am more than qualified to pass opinion on that (indeed I wrote a paper a few years back which was published in a journal). I am more interested in white papers from others, whether it is to do with financial savings (ownership costs) or subjective / psychological factors with regards to user perception.

For PC Gaming i'd use either CRT or Plasma, My iiyama (sp?) monitor can chuck out 120hz modes for playing quake 3 in (i need some new games)

TFT's don't work like CRTs and as a result they don't require high refresh rates. As the picture is digital (using DVI), the whole page is displayed in one go (a little like progressive scan), and as such you don't need the massive line-by-line refresh rates needed by CRT's.
I think it's TFT's all the way. I bought an 18.1" Iiyama 3 years ago for £800 and the quality is still better than most TFT's on the market although the speed is a little slow (18ms). This is the feature you have to look at with TFT's.
Buy a good 19" TFT with a 4-5ms pixel refresh above the £400 range, and you have a monitor that easily beats CRT's.
The only benefit with CRT's is the ability to handle lower resolutions better, but even modern TFT's are getting good at that too.
In fact, my Iiyama has a special processing technology to yield better quality lower resolutions.
Anyhow...i like TFT's!

CRT's and TFT's work exactly the same in that regard (progressive scan) irrespective of the refresh rate (CRT does not require high refresh rates, the game Q3 does however [for reasons other than the display device your using]).

I think what he's saying is that a CRT will visibly flicker at 25hz , even when there's nothing moving on screen, where as a TFT won't.

Speaking of TFT, I saw a nurse push her finger into the Dell TFT screen at our local surgery to point out something to a patient. Can this do any harm? Bent it like a jelly.
It could do, but you'd have to do so reasonably hard, I've not seen one damaged like that before.
As an aside, I'm a huge TFT fan. Currently have a 19" Samsung TFT, having recently bought 3 19" Dell ones, very impressed with those. I'm just about to order a 20.1" Samsung widescreen TFT also, there's simply no comparison in my mind.
Very happy with my WUXGA Screen on my Dell. Miles better than my 19" CRT anyhow is this at all helpful?

Nothing has a refresh rate that low?
and I can notice a CRT flicker at 65hz I have to run at least 75hz for comfort.
You will notice a flicker at anything below 75hz
The higher the better.
(Currently running 1600x1200 at 125hz and get an image miles better than any TFT)

I have a 19" TFT with my new Dell. Cool

Nope they break, I'm sat in a server room with a bunch of 'holed' screens where users have pushed their pointy fingers through the screen :grr:
Edited to add, my main work screen is a ViewSonic VX724 - their flagship 17". I don't so much want size, as quality. This thing rocks...
At home I use the equivilant 19" from their cheaper range - still bloody impressive...

The IBM T221 DG3's are often run at that low a refresh because it's a pain sending them anything at their native resolution at any higher.
