I haven't yet managed a complete lap to get a time

normally get halfway round my first "flying" lap and then stuff it, losing a wheel/wing/whatever.

I think with the default setup 1m32s is about the limit, at least what I've found. I hadn't tried it there yet but just tried a few laps after a few practice laps I got down to within 0.1s of the AI cars at the first checkpoint but lost time after that. Did a few 1m32s laps best being a 1m32.5s but even that could be improved as I messed up the chicane and consequently out me off the final corner. I think I might squeeze a 1m31s out of it but without changes to the setup it won't be quicker. The gear ratios seem to close together as well and I find myself on the limiter too long before changing up.

out of the slow corners you can;t just lean on the traction control.. you can still spin.

Ps. rFactor currently uses a low res mirror image for better FPS I guess, but for a better higher resolution rear view mirror you can download a high res mirror fix from here.

http://forum.rscnet.org/showpost.php?

Just drop the new mirror.bmp into your rfactor/gamedata/vehicles folder.
