I'm scatching my head but most pro dealers are shut. Just looked at Calumet they are open on Sat until 5.30, both Wardour St and 93-103 Drummond Street.

They sell Peli give them a bell, good luck! (Presumably this is to do with no hand luggage... what an bugger).

Nope, no 1470 or 1490. Bummer. Thanks SO much for all of your help and ideas though, 2 hours of googling really isn't coming up with much.
I have got my Natwest Black card conceirge service 'on the case' (bad pun I know) as well trying to find me one.
If I can't get one I may well be putting a laptop bag wrapped in clothes inside my holdall - still not great, more worried about -10 and low pressure than the handling.
My poor MacBook Pro...
anyone got any other ideas???

Does it have to be a Peli? What about another sort of hard case. I thought you couldn't lock checked in bags, or at least customs/ security have the right to smash open locked cases anyway. I'm wondering what to do myself if these security measures remain. I don't fancy putting £15k of camera gear in the hold with light fingered baggage handlers . I'm thinking of FedExing gear out earlier to be picked up when I arrive.
I wouldn't worry about the low temp in the hold. I'm sure it was shipped to the UK this way and, when thawed out, will work fine.

If it comes it and you can't get a peli, it might relieve your nerves slightly to know I once travelled to the US with 5 compaq laptops in a laptop bag wrapped in clothes inside a bigger case - all were unharmed by the trip. US Customs thought I was very weird when they searched my case, but that's another story!
edit - now that I think about it I did the exact same thing when I flew to Japan this year but with just one of the compaq laptops this time. That's 10,000 + miles in baggage hold conditions, and the lappy is still going strong!

Cool - that is reassuring - thanks!!!
As it turns out Calumet have got a 1500 which is slightly larger but means I can take some other stuff as well so no bad thing. Off to pick it up this afternoon if I can't find a 1470 or 1490 in the meantime (though I have a shoot at 1pm so am running out of hunting time).
Have always used Peli and loved it and while I am pretty sure that in a laptop bag wrapped in clothes it will be alright, I want to be definite...
Joe.

I love my Peli 1490 notebook case, though I had a difficult time getting the foam to fit around my notebook with a 17" widescreen...
I haven't the urge yet to toss it in water to see it float, though.

Got the same, 17" widescreen & was wondering if it would fit in a 1490.
Did you have much trouble & what room was left for periverals?

I got it to fit by taking the foam block that you can pull apart, then separate them into strips three (or however deep the laptop is) columns thick, and covering the bottom of the case with them, then taking the bottom foam liner piece and putting it on top of that.
With that setup and an HP DV8000 series notebook, I can fit the notebook and the charger comfortably, with no room for anything else, though you may be able to fit documents and slim-line CD cases between the foam-strip layer and bottom liner layer. But do you need anything else...?

Prob not need anything else.....as lippy & nail varnish go in my handbag
bet i bust a few nails sorting it though

I would also double-check the interior dimensions, or more specifically the width of the computer, as that would probably the only issue, if there was one.

I thought this was only the case for travel to the USA, but might be wrong. I'm toying with the idea of getting a Peli case too since this latest security alert, but the other alternative I thought of is just sticking my lowepro bag into a hard Samsonite suitcase I have - should be sufficient protection and less conspicous.

It looks like you can buy TSA approved locks which allow TSA inspectors access with a pass key, and in theory they won't be cut open. Not ideal, but better than no lock at all.

I thought that the main reason for having a lock on luggage/baggage is to keep it closed? Especially since, IIRC, cases by a given manufacturer will only share a handful of keys.
