Sony and their ever diminishing memory sizes. From left to right - Compact Flash (for reference), Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, and the newest addition, Memory stick Micro M2.

Those tiny little buggers come in up to 1GB format!

I'm waiting for any manufacturer to get a clue and add a phone to a camera, rather than the other way round. Currently a crappy little plastic lens and tiny sensor gets added to a phone and they call it a camera....

Anyway, being a gadget freak I got myself a Sony Ericcson k800i with it's 3.2mp "Sony CyberShot" camera built in.

It has a "proper" flash which is pretty good, but ultimately it's hamstrung by not having a real lens. Perfectly adequate for resizing for web use, but not much else. My usual test image for a new camera or lens, very scientific

A closer look at a 100%crop reveals the terrible truth... It's crap.

If I was judging sony's cybershot range by that "camera", I'd run a mile. Now if either sony did it with a real cybershot camera, or if canon or nikon would make a deal with nokia to add a phone to an existing compact camera, i'd be first in the queue and I'd pay handsomely for the privilege. Ho hum.

I had a mess about with my brothers new phone (Samsung E900 - good phone btw) anyway, he showed me all the covered ports, one being the memory card slot, he then removed the memory card, its TINY! its gotta be about the size of my little finger nail! it just goes to show how small memory cards are becoming, Although the cameras on the phones don't seem to be evolving as well as they should. I'd certainly buy a phone with a good camera specifically if there was one being made, although when i've seen photos from friends camera phones, they've always been good (especially the ones from Sony Ericsson phone).

But make sure to bear in mind that the large majority of people are still using disposable film cameras and, even worse, Kodak C300-type cameras (i.e. <$100 digital cameras). Their expectations are not very high, and as long as 4x6 prints come out as well as they do with said cameras, they don't care.

On a side note, I would usually discourage people from buying the plastic-lens, fixed-focal length, digital-for-the-sake-of-being-digital cameras and encourage them instead to get a film camera that runs about the same price, as they'll get much better image quality, and the cost really isn't all that high, as these people aren't really taking more than a roll or two of shots per event. The only people for whom these cameras are not a waste are those who intend to use them solely for eBay work, or similar purposes.

At any rate, any bets on how soon there's a Nikasio D80p, the DSLR with phone built in?
