Just got back from our holiday in The Highlands, covering a total of 2242 miles in 2 weeks. The roads up there were great. Some are just single track with passing places for miles and miles, but the traffic was very light. The Monaro behaved itself impeccably, eating up the motorway miles with ease and cruising around the mountains in comfort. The computer did throw up the oil service indicator on the way back, but this probably just needs resetting as it was serviced not long ago. The trip computer has recorded a average of 25.6 mpg for the trip which I thought was quite respectable.

We even managed a spotted...V6 JDT in Inverness (hi Jeff ) and stopped for a quick chat between rain showers.

Here's a few pics from the trip...

View from Struie Hill...

Glen Cannich...

Heading over the Bealach na Ba to Applecross...

Fantastic beach near Durness, right at the top...

Looks superb, been up there many times, but never in the Monaro(yet). The road to Applecross is scary, great stuff!

Are you able to post a general route type thing?
There's some fabby roads up there and it'd be great to know which are recommended like.

Thanks for the comments folks.

Nige, when planning our trip, I got a lot of advice from fellow Pistonheaders based upon in the Highlands, particularly GetCater, whose website www.stevecarter.com is really good. Here is a route he recommneds... www.stevecarter.com/bestuk.htm We covered most of that whilst we were up there.

North of Glasgow, our overall route was basically as follows.....deep breath....
A82 past Lock Lommond, through Fort William, Fort Augustus, to Drumnadrochit.
We stayed around here for the first week, so did a few runs out from here (A82 to Inverness and A9 south to Aviemore, A9 and A832 north to Chanonry Point to see the dolphins, A831 west and VERY small round into Glen Cannich.)
We did the A82 between Fort Augustus and Inverness a few times and it can be a fun road!

For the second week we went...
A833 north to Beauly, then A862 through Dingwall to the A9.
A9 to Alness, then the B9176 to the A836.
A836 all the way to Tongue on the north cost. This is single track road for most of the way, but it's a relatively fast road. Narrow...but fun.
A838 to Durness, then south to Laxford Bridge.
A894 south through Ullapool.
A835 south for 12 miles, then the A832 going anticlockwise around Wester Ross to Kinlochewe.
A896 west to Torridon and Shieldaig, then south picking up the Balach na Baa (Pass of the Cattle) over to Applecross...and back. Must be done.
A896, then A890 and some very minor roads to Plockton.
A87 onto Skye, all over Skye, then ferry from Armadale to Mallaig.
A830 from Mallaig to Fort William.
Then A82 south again!

It's a shame it's so far away, but once you're there, the scenary and roads are fab! Well worth planning a trip at some point I'd say.

Cheers,

Neil
