350i been off the road for two months now as i await gearbox repair by CTS...just hope it's worth the wait.... the gearbox I sent them to refurb to replace my broken one has been pronounced unfit (signs of burnt gears) so is now redundant (anyone need a stripped LT77?) and they are rebuilding the broken one from the car. barnet TVR Centre have been very patient (the car languishes in their service bay)- thanks chaps. slightly miffed at long delays at CTS and unexpected charges (£80+vat) to just inspect a box - just hope the end result is worth all the extra expense.

I would tell them to forget it and take the box somewhere else. Its is a few hour job to strip and rebuild the box. I enquired about a year ago for the same. I was told by numerous places the box would be next day collection.

I have a stripped down faulty gearbox from my wedge.

I was told it was repairable was quoted around £600 for the required new parts and labour to rebuild.#

Luckily I got hold of another one cheap that had done only 6k miles from a griff that was being upgraded.

I still have the original, planning to keep it incase I ever needed it - if its any use to you - email me

Ouch! I just buy second hand ones off ebay, for about a hundred including 'postage'. I spose if you're having it fitted then it costs about 700 quid just for the in and out job, so it's a bit risky if the box turns out to be duff, but I've done quite well so far. I also have a spare in the garage for the inevitable next replacement.

thanks for notes guys - I'll post again when i know then outcome of the rebuild. I now also have a 'stripped' bag of bits in the garage for 'spares or repair' - not sure it's much use to anyine though....

aha! yes you do need one, to sit beside the leaking trolley jack that doesn't really work any more and the old toaster that seemed such a shame to throw away after it caught fire for the 3rd time.....

My house came with a Lotus box already in bits so I never felt the need for another

WTF???
Have they knackered your old box and thats why its taken them sooooo long - to find another box?

Guy rekons that the box was nackered so much that they had to source another one and rebuild that. Which I suppose is feasible.

Only trouble is the box I sent off had threads for 10mm bolts that hold the cotton reel bushes to the box and this box has 8mm holes! So its a totally new box.

I asked about the internals and ratios and they said that they have been completely changed over anyhow and the serial number on the outside is now meaningless, its what they have put inside that counts....so he reckons.

Hmmm.

The box I sent off had 10mm holes the one that turned up had 8mm holes.

Drilling and tapping the holes ain't really a problem its just it would have been nice to have been told beforehand.

I asked them about the ratios and they said they 'should be the same'! I Didn't to get to talk to the gaffer or the guy who did the job on my box so I will have to wait until Tuesday to get to the bottom of it.

Bit of a breakdown in communication I suspect but dosen't inspire confidence thus far.

Well you can measure the ratios without putting the box in by counting the revs in each gear - in and out.

However the main thing to look for is the suffix number on the box. If you sent them a 'D' and got back an 'A' - well, you've been done, mate. See other postings about suffix numbers.

Can't old suffix boxes be upgraded to latest and best spec?

Was hoping this, as I have two older boxes (one still in a Rover SD1, and yes one in the cellar), and when needed that they could be overhauled and turned in to the right/best spec.
