One very sweet '97 Camaro. If that was a manual, I'd be very, very tempted. Seems a bit expensive though. (I'm sure LuS1fer will confirm )

For a start, there is no such car as an F1 Camaro so that's a meaningless sticker. They came as a Z28 or an SS. This is a Z28 as the SS has a central bonnet scoop. It doesn't doesn't have the Japanese lights so it's a European car. The folding mirrors give away the fact that it's not a US car and a lot of US Camaros come with cloth interiors and no ASR. The odometer is also in kilometres.

His claimed power output is total b*llsh*t. The 1997 LT1 produced an honest 275bhp. The 1998 LS1 (with the peanut-shaped headlamps) produced something around 320 bhp although only 305 was claimed to distance it from the Corvette. This is an LT1 though. I can't see any modifications declared to warrant a claim of 385hp (he does say "Tuning" but I can't see any under the bonnet, not even an intake) and the table says 350 so I suggest it's one of those lies that gets told to sell a car. He says it's like the V8 in the Corvette and so it is....the C4 and that only produced 300bhp.

His price is a little high although it has low miles and is in good condition. Some think because they stopped production in 2002, it's a classic but it isn't...yet. It's probably also cashing in on the Camaro concept. I sold my modified LS1 with Bilstein suspension and 18" wheels and full chassis strengthening for less than £8k but the thing is the LS1 is the one to have, not the LT1. I wouldn't worry about the auto, it's preferable in many ways to the manual and there aren't that many manuals around. The thing I don't like about this car is the body kit. I hate body kits on Camaros. They don't suit it. That's not a stock rear spoiler either.

Thanks LuS1fer. I thought the power output seemed OTT. Those sort of porkies put me off straight away and make me think "what else is he making up"

Still, it's a great looker and it really suits the silver and black paintjob. I don't normally do bodykits, but this ones not too bad. I prefer the headlights on the earlier car to the "peanut" ones though. Just personal choice I guess.

The manual/automatic choice? I like to play tunes with my engines and that aint possible with an auto. Besides, my 300zx is an auto and it's just about the one thing I'd change.

As I said in my previous post, I'm just toying with the idea at the 'mo (and it's YOU making me take a serious look at Camaros as well as Mustangs!).

I've got a feeling I'll stick with the Zed until I'm ready for the Monaro or the Mustang....but who knows. And it's fun looking.

Annoyingly, there was a company who made a billet push-down auto gearknob for the Camaro who went tits-up. THis single item was, in my view, the best single mod I made to my Camaro. Instead of having to depress a clunky button on top of the stick and pull back, you just pushed down and slid the lever back. This made playing with the gears as easy as a manual rather than an annoyance. I don't think anybody makes them now which is a real shame.

I don't blame you for wanting to wait. I still love my (modified) Z28 more than I love my Mustang. However, I'd have to say that subframe connectors are desirable on these cars as is Bilstein suspension as otherwise the tail can wag coming hard off a roundabout. You may prefer the lights on the early Camaro but they are an irrelevance when it's really a choice between the LT1 and the LS1. The LS1 is an all alloy totally new design with a vastly superior intake and power output whereas the LT1 was a strange development of the old V8 with an iron block and a very odd "Optispark" ignituion system on the end of the crank which gave problems early on. The main performance difference is that the LT1 runs out of steam where the LS1 will rev to the redline. On the quarter mile, there's not much in it by the 1/8th mile as the LT1 has more low down torque but then the LS1 will keep puklling and top out at around 102-105mph whereas the LT1 will only make about 98mph. The LT1 will run 14's and the LS1 will run anywhere in the 13's.

The Monaro is all very well and is a well-sorted handler but it's carrying 300kg more than a Camaro or Mustang and suffer accordingly.

The odd thing I have noted about American muscle cars is that they are addictive. Most people who buy one tend to stick with them. In that respect, I prefer the Camaro. The Mustang was never my thing and I found it a lot harder to click with. Not sure why. Probably stems from the Fox body car looking like an Escort. LOL.

I have a '95 Z28. Whilst LuS1fer definately knows his Camaros better than me, I think the LT1 is an excellent car for the money. When I bought mine 5 years ago (funnily enough I sold a Nissan 300ZX TT to buy it), the LS1 was still relatively expensive. I gave just under £9K for mine, and LS1's were at least £12K then. I bought mine with only 19K miles on it, and it's still only up to 28K now. I use a van for work so although the Camaro lives outside and gets used all weathers it still doesn't do a lot of miles. My car has been very reliable - the only trouble I've had was the water pump packed up. I do have occasional "Service Engine" lights and the ABS warning but I'm looking into sorting it and it doesn't worry me as parts are easy and most are cheap. I use ebay.com for many bits and it's often much cheaper. The problem with mine is that in '95 Chevy used ALDL output through and OBDII plug on the Camaro, so you can't just use any decoder or scanner. I'm still trying to locate a sensibly priced one, then I'll sort the little niggles.
The car you have seen looks good in my opinion as I like to modify my cars. I don't think the bodykit looks too bad but I agree with LuS1fer that the Camaro doesn't need it. I don't like Silver cars though, it's the most common colour on the roads at the moment. I've fitted the same stripe kit as the silver car has, plus 18's, Wings West rear spoiler (I think the factory one looks crap), flamed gauges, light blackouts (I'm not a fan of the headlights either)etc. Also, a LuS1fer says, the power output quoted would need some pretty serious attention to the engine and "tuning" doesn't cover it, factory is 275 hp. I'd avoid that car on that point alone. If I were buying now, I'd try to go for an LS1 as there's no question it's a better engine. All comes down to your budget really. I think this is a better bet - but again they don't look good stock : LS1 Camaro on ebay
Here's my '95 - If I were selling I would be asking £5.5 - £6K based on mileage, mods, and condition. They can be had cheaper though, but they look crap with 16" wheels and high ride height etc.
The Silver one is way over-priced at £8K+

Spooky, I can't remember the last time I saw a Camaro, and then one rumbles passed at lunchtime (Guildford). It was an LS1 (the later model). See, I am learning
