How dya know if yer pre cats are stuffed?

I've done a search here and on the Chim section and can't find the info I'm looking for. I'm suspicious that my pre-cats may be stuffed because I have observed in the past one of them glowing dull red (on a pitch black night) on tickover and also I think the exhaust may be running hotter than it used to (it's charred the carpet on the transmission tunnel - I don't know how long ago this occured). Mind you, I had an ignition problem at the time of the glowing exhaust which is now fixed.
Any experience out there?

I have heard that the use of stainless bolts can stuff pre cats. This is known as psopcdtsb (premature stuffing of pre cats due to stainless bolts)

Sorry could not resist, although I would imagine that they might hold on to heat longer and possibly glow. Someone on the griff pages had this prob when he dynoed the engine. will post link when i find it.

I had exactly the same when on a rolling road. Got them ripped out...found half of one in my engine bay about a fortnight later though wedged between the chassis and steering rack though.
