Just a quick post to see why people give Traffic police such a hard time. Is it because no-one likes to be told there are wrong???
Being a Roads Policing Officer (Traffic) i go to numerous colisions: serious injury,Fatal and slight injury. I assist in the investigation into these, aswell as enforcing the law on the road. Yes some of my time is spent enforcing speed limits (it has it's place in casualty reduction) etc, etc....
I have to deal with some grim sights and undertake some unpleasant tasks, i am not complaining about this as it is the job i do, but why give Traffic officers such a hard time??

Just would like to know some opinions????????

Traffic Officers? I don't give them a hard time at all. I have been pulled a few times by traffic officers, never had cause to complain.

SCPs tax collectors? I would happily line them up against a wall.......

Blakeypj I'm entirely supportive of the job you do. I think if the rest of us had to see some of the carnage that you're privvy to, and the attitudes of the idiots you encouter, there would be national calls for your wages to be trebled.

Hooray for Trafpol, down with speed scameras IMO.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you stick around. I suspect you'll find (depending on your POV) you're quite welcome here and while we may grumble and whinge, on the whole most of PH is very pro-Trafpol.

Definitely.

Speed cameras = bad
Trafpol = good
Unless they're nicking you at the time of course

Trafpol?

Whats one of those?

Never seem them in darkest Yorkshire. Used to see 5 a day on the way back and forth to Leeds from Sheffield, now about zero. Very sad state of affairs as they are much preferable to vans on bridges (not arrived yet but give it time...)

and btw, welcome!

Hear, hear.

Trafpol stand for common sense. They give idiots a finger-wagging for inconsiderate driving, and provide a visible deterrent for dangerous cretins that don't care about the rules. They work to improve safety as, after all, they have no other incentive to do what they do.

Scamera partnerships just seem to be driven by netting off fines, and hide in bushes seemingly hoping to catch out an unsuspecting 60-year-old who's driven 40 years without an accident but is driving at more than "10% plus two".

Who is giving the police a hard time? here on PH or in general?

Think most PH are in favour or real police on our roads, policing. and helping on PH.

Its the poor govt policy on the causes of crashes and their reduction stratagy that causes me concern. Speed kills? No it doesnt.

There are a few gripers on here - it's easy to forget that the trafpol who has just stopped you for driving like a tt, may just have turned the corner from scraping somebody's brains off the road, following the antics of another tt. It's not easy, I bet, to be polite and courteous in all circumstances.

I would prefer there to be more trafpol around to enforce good driving standards,(or at least punish bad ones), rather than this current fixation on speed=bad, slow=good. The old "Unsafe at any Speed" could apply to a lot of drivers...

I, and I'm sure the vast majority of PHers, value the work of Trafpol. We have some great Trafpol/BiB on this forum and any negative opinions are usually directed at the high level policies, not the working level people. Long may our PH Trafpol/BiB post on this forum!

No tends not to be on here (PH) but in general, there appears to be a thought that Traf Pol are all moody and get there kicks out of pulling someone over for a petty reason purely to spoil someones driving enjoyment, which is not the case.

Speed kills???? This is dependant on the circumstances and the appropriate use of speed. Far to many pedestrians are killed as a result of excess speed in built up areas, but there are many contributory factors not only speed.
People however do over estimate there own skill and ability.

There are very few people here that give the traffic police a hard time, but there will always be the odd bad experience, and naturally, one would be annoyed by this and wish to express their opinion.

People only remember the bad things they read, and not the good so much. Also as with any internet forum, if someone is happy, they generally do not shout about it, so you only hear about the complaints.

Generally I admire the work that TrafPol do and the scenes of horrific accidents that you have to attend.

My last fine was from TrafPol who didn't really say much at all, no patronising comments and no "advice" which I was fine with apart from not driving dangerously imo. We then both continued on our way along the dual carriageway, what I found a bit frustrating was that we both found ourselves in a queue behind an outside lane moron, sticking more or less to the limit but without any intention of moving back to the inside lane, nothing was done. What I'd like to see is more TrafPol but more focus on the poor driving standards in this country, you have the expertise it just often appears to me that this is wasted on the current "speed kills" policies.

blakeypj, firstly welcome!
secondly, I think you'll find that trafpol are welcome here as their opinions are often extremely useful.
What we despise are the gatsos and Scamerati, who exist solely to fleece the motorists. (there are NO reliable statistics which show that they bring any improvements)

What we need are more trafpol, pulling over the junkies, scrap and crap car drivers, untaxed, uninsured scrotes,
as well as good trafpol work getting rid of mlms (middle lane morons) and olms (outside lane morons) and the "41mph everywhere" brigade who are extremely vocal until they're caught doing 45 in a 30 limit!!!

You will tend to notice over a period that the majority of Bib Bashers here are new members (e.g. a few days and a few posts) who have just been nicked and sign up hoping for some magical quick fix to get them off. Having had their rant and also discovering that said fix does not exist (although there is plenty of good advice on what to do etc.) usually disappear again. If you treat these with the proverbial dose of salt I think you will find most of the content here acceptable.

Does it really have its place in casualty reduction?? I guess it depends what type of speed limits you are enforcing. Strangely a lot of BiB I see with their hairdryers seem to be on motorway bridges these days.. is that really reducing casualties??

I'm all for more traffic officers (police not HATOs I mean ) on the roads, but I think most on here would prefer you concentrate on more dangerous drivers rather than motorway speeders

Welcome to PH

No problem (ever) with a TP. Many have given generously of their own time / resources (IAM, RIDE and other safety schemes).

Thank you for doing the job - not one that I myself would be able to / good at.

Well, to be fair a lot of you are petty little jobsworths in my experience. I'm sure you're not but I've met quite a few. Common sense should be used, it's not that common though unfortunately and fixed penalties get handed out all too easily.

I completely agree, I don't sit at motorway bridges, my speed enforcement (when I get time to do it) is in built up 30/40 mph speed limits in residential areas. I prefer to spend my time at work concentrating on dangerous/inconsiderate/drunk drivers.
