Chaps, the saga continues. Cannot get my Netgear DG834G wireless modem & router to work with my TalkTalk broadband on my laptop. After delving into the detailed manual, it turns out that the router's firewall (whatever the hell that is) doesn't support broadband that runs through a USB connected modem; hence incompatibility with my broadband. So looks like I have wasted some money.

But wait - I then google away and find something called the Netgear WG111, which is a 'USB adaptor' - so does this fella sort out my problems?

Basically, I am confused. My laptop is wireless enabled. My broadband provider have given me a USB modem - but I thought that should not matter as the Newtgear is a modem/router; so surely bypasses the Speedtouch USB modem that TalkTalk sent me. So why the hell wil none of this work?

I hate computers. I really do.

Can't you use the modem inside your existing wireless router/modem, rather than bringing in the broadband side via the USB port and just using the router function?

Throw the USB modem away.

Connect the DG834G direct to the Microfilter.

Open the admin page at http://192.168.0.1 and enter your TalkTalk connection details into the User page.

Surf.

DG834G is one of the best pieces of equipment around for easy configuration.

Plotloss is entirely correct.

It is easiest however to connect the DG834G to your PC by network cable for the initial configuration. once you've connected it this way, input the IP address as noted by PL, you will be prompted for a username and password (they are printed on a little label on the base of the DG834G)
once logged in, input your ISP username and password and away you (should) go.

The only issue I've had with these routers is that they are a little fussy about the quality of the line, I had one install fail a couple of weeks ago because of too much noise on the line.

As an aside, once set up, remember to secure the wireless side of your router, otherwise all and sundry can connect to your connection and surf.
If you want some help with this, let me know.

I can back up all these as well, multiple DG834G's installed over the last couple of years - great bits of kit.

Do as Plotters says and you'll be fine

That is by far the most sensible thing anyone with a USB ADSL modem can do.

I've still got me Speedtouch Frog thing, just in case...

Netgear kit rocks on the whole though, its all I use personally and professionally.

Plotters - this sounds like a great plan, but it will not let me do it! How do I get the correct TalkTalk broadband details? Chap on the other end of the phone had no idea what I was asking for just now (and neither did I)...

Ahh, I think I see the problem here.

You're trying to do this wirelessly and wireless isnt enabled currently in the new router...

Am I close?

PS - I am a complete tech numpty, just so everyone knows. What seems obvious to ou chaps is deeply confusing to me...
My machine just will not configure correctly, using Netgear setup disc and everything. Gets me to teh modem setup page and then, after that, nothing makes sense or works!

You shouldnt need the CD at all, the DG834 should just expose itself to the laptop.

If you can get hold of a network cable, configuring it via wire will be the path of least resistance.

Plotters you little beauty - did what you said, and it worked! I can now look at naked ladies while in bed, er, I mean do important internet research type stuff, obviously.

Now, need to make my network secure so that dastardly villains can't access my broadband. The router setup had security enabled on the wireless setup page; is that all I have to do?

Yours wirelessly,

Flash.

Which security type was enabled?

WEP or WPA-PSK?

WPA-PSK (just followed your link and checked it). Seems to be the one to use from Netgear's blurb, but I never get asked my network key when accessing - this is OK, right?

PS - loving this Firefox tabbed browsing thing, too..

Cheers mucker! Now PH may have the dubious pleasure of drunken Flashman posts at ungodly hours of the morning. You lucky people.

I meant it - if you & I are ever at the same PH event, come over and claim your ale. 5'9" Asian chap driving a bright blue Porker 968 convertible. This is a tangible example of PH being of immediate, real-time help for numpties. Result!
