...or Background Intelligent Transfer Service is switched to Stopped and I can't switch it to Started. Apparently that's why I can't download windows updates. I've even downloaded the newer BITS thingy for win 2000 but still never had any joy.

Anybody got any quick fixes?

Cheers.

What happens when you try to start it and does it generate on error in Event Viewer?

BITS is usually set to a startup type of "manual" - at least is on all the machines here, but they download updates just fine.

It generates an error 1068.

It was set to Manual but I read on the microsoft website it should be set to Automatic. Auto or Manual, still won't start.

This is the error message on trying to start it...

Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on local computer.

Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start.

BITS is dependent on RPC, but if that has failed, an awful lot of other things on your machine wont be working either!

A quick google for BITS 1068 brings forth this KB article from MS.. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=91

Have a look through that and see if it steers you towards something that resembles a working system

Cheers Slinky, I've managed to start it. This is the bit that worked, that I'm sure I tried before......

.......Microsoft Windows 2000
1.Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2.If one or more of the following services are not running, right-click the service, and then click Start:

•Com+ Event System
•System Event Notification
•Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions

3.Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Start.
